5.5
Designed by the legendary Jack Nicklaus, Simola has comfortably claimed the title of my absolute favorite Nicklaus course in the world. Winding high above the Knysna landscape, the course delivers an intensely immersive atmosphere. The surrounding lush, dense greenery makes it feel like you are playing golf right in the middle of a beautiful jungle. If you had to describe the entire experience in just a single word, it would be ‘fun.’
The layout kicks off with an absolute bang; the front nine has to be up there with the single best front nines in all of South Africa. From a conditioning standpoint, the fairways are completely immaculate, providing perfect, pristine lies from tee to green. You can absolutely step up and post a great score here, provided you can avoid the sand, the course plays beautifully until you find yourself tangled up in a bunker.
What truly sets Simola apart architecturally are the green complexes. They are brilliantly thought out and demand precise strategic calculations on every single approach shot. You have to think deeply about exactly where you want to land your ball on the green, as hitting the wrong tier or missing your spot can make a massive difference to your scorecard. Fortunately, the surfaces roll incredibly fast and true, firmly sliding into my personal top five greens in the entire country.
The individual hole designs are incredibly memorable, with holes 2, 6, and 8 standing out as my absolute favorites. Simola beautifully balances dramatic jungle views with high-stakes tactical golf, making it an essential, incredibly enjoyable loop for any serious player.
This course easily cracks my personal top 10 in SA!
