South Shields

South Shields Golf Club was established close to the North Sea coastline in 1893, next to the Cleadon Water Tower which is one of the most visible landmarks in the area.

Alister MacKenzie was appointed to extend the course when two adjacent fields were acquired in 1913 and nothing much has changed in over a hundred years since then.

Occupying a 95-acre property immediately next to Whitburn Golf Club, the course extends to almost 6,300 yards from the back tees and plays to a par of 71 (36 out then 35 in).

Highlights on the front nine include the opening 176-yard par three hole (Fellside”) and the tough, long par four 7th (“Up n’ Over”) which doglegs left to a bunkerless green.

On the back nine, notable holes include the par five 12th (“Beacon Hill”)with three fairway cross bunkers in a diagonal close to the green, along with the strong, right doglegging par four 16th (MacKenzie”).
