The layout was designed by Don Sechrest, a former PGA Tour player who turned his golfing attention to course architecture in 1963. During a design career spanning four decades, he fashioned almost a hundred courses, mainly in the Midwest, and Southwind opened for play in 1980.
Notable holes include a couple of very long par fours at the 1st (468-yards) and 17th (478-yards); the par three 6th (where the green sits between sand and water); and the 600-yard 10th, where the green is protected by water to the front of the putting surface.
