Jack Nicklaus designed all 27 holes at Springfield Royal at Cha-am. The Mountain (A) and Lake (B) nines make up the premier 18-hole configuration, but the Valley loop is also worth playing at this impressive resort.
The golf facility here at Springfield Royal Country Club was one of several Thai projects undertaken by the Golden Bear during the early 1990s and it remains – along with Laem Chabang International – one of his best.
Never a man to under sell his work, Jack says of his design, “it is a championship course with five sets of tees to play from, offering varying degrees of difficulty that accentuate the dramatic lush landscape. Be prepared for some long carries if you are brave enough to play from the back tees. It is one of the best courses you will ever play!”
It's a shame that Springfield Royal does not get the same attention as Black Mountain or Banyan, when in fact it should. The reason for that I suspect is the course maintenance standards, which is a key factor for the typical holidaying golfer. But for those discerning enough will be wowed by the quality of the layout, with some memorable holes. It is one of the must play golf courses in Hua Hin especially for discerning golfers, who are value layout over course condition. I played Springfield last year but did not make the effort of playing it again this year. I am not a fan of Nicklaus courses and have no outstanding memory of this course except for the last hole over water and a pleasant clubhouse. It could be that I should play it again and then make a judgement. DAVID LAIRD
