Review for Spyglass Hill

Reviewer Score:

What a seriously under-rated course. It is overpriced, as everything on 17 mile drive is, and the greens were not at their very best when I played following hollow coring, but there the criticism largely ends. I have played newer RTJ designs and thought them contrived in the extreme. Not this. From the very clever use of a steepish slope at 2, to the brilliant, lie of the land, sliver of green at 4, that must be approached from precisely the right angle, to 14, as fine a strategic par 5 as I know, there are excellent holes aplenty here. A fine set of par threes too, and by no means all long, but certainly all testing. Much of the rest is just very, very hard. I suppose if you pick faults, some of the fairway bunkering is a touch samey, but anything else negative on here is, in my view, largely a way of saying "It is isn't Pebble or Cypress". My view was, that for all that, it is a very high class golf course indeed. James
