Spyglass Hill is possibly the hardest golf course on the Monterey Peninsula. The hilly land tumbles down towards the sea, leaving fairways lined with cypress and pines, laced with areas of brilliant white sand.

This is a great course which is overshadowed by other ones on a different tier. The course starts out with 5 holes on the beach, all of which are great holes. The next 13 traverse back through a forested area. You don’t get a ton of forested holes on the peninsula, so this kind of adds a unique feel to the course. As I said, the first 5 holes are great. You’re instantly hit with ocean views on the first headed downhill, then a short par 4 back up the hill. 3 is a cute par 3 headed back down towards the ocean, and in my opinion, the par 3s are the best part of Spyglass. The 4th is the famous hole, a tricky par 4 to an impossible two tiered green. The fifth is an uphill par 3 which I think deserves more love, as it’s overshadowed by the former. Then comes the forest. While it is a good change of pace, I didn’t find it super memorable. The par 3s are both good little shots, and I liked 17 and 18. Overall, a really good experience, but anyone online who said it’s better than Pebble is out of their mind.
The latest ranking of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World serves as the ultimate global golf bucket list. Most members of our World Top 100 Panel are seasoned golfers, each playing 20-30 of these courses annually while travelling extensively over decades to form their opinions on others. We recognise that opinions vary—even among our panel members. Rankings are subjective, and there are undoubtedly 50 or more courses in the UK and USA alone that could easily fit onto this list.
