Review for St Andrews Beach

Reviewer Score:

St Andrews Beach played April 2022.

I play this course once a year over the Easter Break with a cyclist friend. I have always wondered how it attained such a high ranking . It does represent great value and is worth playing but I agree a lot with Mark Lawrence's view.

It is tough as it is only par 70 at 6000 m which makes it long for a club golfer.

Poor holes ;

1. Green complex is blind (unless you hit adjacent to it after your second )

10 . Tiny elevated green complex that would befit a hole of around 300m not a medium to long par 4.

14 . A ridiculously conceived aberration. Any well struck drive left of what one imagines is fairway-centre disappears down a chute and ends up almost in the front yard of a house on Max street ! Its 430 m-odd and is a par 4 and plays into the wind every time i have played it. I call it a par 5.

15 . Just dull

It has some wonderful holes. 3, (from front tees) , 4-6 are good holes,

11 is fabulous par 3 .

Being public it suffers from very average conditioning and the greens are slow making putting somewhat less enjoyable.

Tom Doak is flavour of the month at the moment. Not entirely sure why. Give me Tony Cashmore anytime!

The Dunes is a fabulous course without any obvious flaws. Brilliant design. No weird stuff.
