The Castle Course is quirky but at times unfair when good golf shots are punished (so say my local friends, not me). The views back to the toon are outstanding (and probably the best in St Andrews) and when you're standing at the far end of the course you really feel 'alive' looking out over the sea and having the wind in your face. The closing stretch is tough!
There are some holes that are just a bit too quirky for me and some (most?) of the green complexes are too undulating. I think subtle greens win over wavy greens (except for the Biarritz). I also believe any single golf hole benefits from asking only one, maybe two questions for the hacker, not constant questions: tough tee shot, penal fairway and greenside bunkers, having to carry a ditch in front of the green (so you can't run it up) and then a wildly undulating green. This happens quite a bit here.
If I were local I'd probably play the Castle Course once a month. It might also make a fun matchplay course but I wouldn't run back. I'd rather be on the other side of the toon and play the Old and New (and the others).
By all means you should play and discover it for yourself, I was just a bit confused by the design choices and layout.

The latest ranking of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World serves as the ultimate global golf bucket list. Most members of our World Top 100 Panel are seasoned golfers, each playing 20-30 of these courses annually while travelling extensively over decades to form their opinions on others. We recognise that opinions vary—even among our panel members. Rankings are subjective, and there are undoubtedly 50 or more courses in the UK and USA alone that could easily fit onto this list.
