First of all it was my first golf trip to Saint Andrews and I really wanted to try all golf courses around here. Actually was not chance to try The Old, but I played all of another six.
My personal number one at Saint Andrews Links is The Castle! Real service and attention to the players. We came by taxi and were met from the door and escorted to the clubhouse. The friendly staff explained and showed everything and provided other necessary information. We all received a starter pack with a tee, a field guidebook and a basket to hold the scorecard and other small items. It is very nice indeed. The driving range is right next door and very close to the 1st tee. Actually, we decided to play it once more after the first round and booked for the next one immediately. The second round was as impressive as the first.
The first impression about fields was „wow“. I can‘t to say here was a lot of hazards, but the wind and brushes was a main killers of good score. Of course, we should not forget the bunkers, which seem to be full everywhere - both on the fairway and around the green. Some of them are really "evil".
The fields are high quality, fairways wide and firm...greens huge and fast. Although the fairways are wide, they are very undulating and sloped, so you never know if you really hit the first shot. Greens have several levels and also with a considerable slope. If you hit further from the flag, you can make more than two putts easily. A nice new restaurant with amazing views and reasonable prices should also be mentioned.
I‘d like to recommend any golfer to make The Castle a must-play in St Andrews. Both the fields themselves and the service are of a high standard and worthy of attention.
Every golf course rating is always a subject with a lot of subjectivity, depending on various criteria. I always rating by the following criteria‘s: course complexity or challenging, fields condition (especially greens & fairways), service (only what you can get: buggies, clubs rent, condition of clubs, the amount of choice and etc. except staff and other subjective things that depends on your or staff mood), surrounding views or pleasure to the eyes and definitely value for the price. All criteria will be rated from 1 to 5 stars. Concerning The Castle Course my personal opinion is follow:
1. Challenging – 4*+
2. Condition – 5*
3. Service - 5*+
4. Surroundings – 4*+
5. Value for the price – 5*
I'll definitely come back.
