Review for Stanton-on-the-Wolds

Played this course today and delighted to be posting the 1st review on this course. This is a parkland course dating back to 1906 played over relatively flat land with humps and furrows (wolds) which date back to historic farming techniques prevalent within the area.

I had played this course a few years ago and couldn't remember much about it apart from the 1st, which you play by teeing off back down a fairway in front of the clubhouse and flat and uninspiring as a start, so that struck me as I turned into the driveway top the clubhouse that perhaps this wasn't much of a stand out track.

And it isn't. It is a lovely golf course, well looked after and maintained with really slick greens. The speed of the greens is the courses main defence, as a lot of the holes are short (off the yellow tees the course is 6200 yards long), but the fast greens and on some holes, quite small greens do provide a good defence if your ball is out of position.

Quite wide fairways and tree lined but with no bushes to speak of means that even wide shots can be found easily.

The standout hole for me is the 13th, at only 356 yards, a good tee shot down the left or ideally centre sets up a short iron into a lovely green, raised against the land around it and bunkers surrounding it. a very pleasant green to look down on.

There are 4 par 3's, all enjoyable, the best being the 2nd which is all carry, anything short of the green will roll back into a ditch and the 10th which at 164 yards is all down hill and near the excellent half way house.

We were playing in a match and the short course made for good scoring and a close game, so the course was ideal for this.

I wouldn't want to play this course every week as a member as it is a tad same and not enough strong standout holes for me. there are 4 par 5's and a par of 73 on what is a short course, which means the par 4's whilst fun to play as they were short (and for me short pars 4's are welcome not having a long drive in me), they weren't testing enough.

Other notes - good practice facilities - range and short game and putting, nice clubhouse and friendly staff.
