Stanton-on-the-Wolds Golf Club
The small settlement of Stanton-on-the-Wolds is located outside Nottingham, just off the main road to Melton Mowbray, and the 18-hole course at Stanton-on-the-Wolds Golf Club is set between the village and the A606 road.
It’s a Tom Williamson design from 1906, one of many courses that were planned for clubs around the Midlands by the Notts professional during his 54-year career at Hollinwell, with holes occupying a 105-acre property on a rolling landscape.
Configured as two returning nines, the layout plays to a par of 73 and a round here ends somewhat unconventionally with back-to-back par fives on the 17th and 18th. The overall length extends to 6,456 yards and the outward half plays 350 yards shorter than the inward.
Fairways are generally tight and tree-lined, rewarding accurate shots and punishing those off line. Coupled with strategically placed bunkers and raised greens, this a fine test of golf for players of all abilities.
Highlight holes include the tough, right doglegged 4th and the short par four 8th on the front nine, along with both par threes on the back nine (at the 183-yard 10th and 152-yard 15th).

The latest ranking of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World serves as the ultimate global golf bucket list. Most members of our World Top 100 Panel are seasoned golfers, each playing 20-30 of these courses annually while travelling extensively over decades to form their opinions on others. We recognise that opinions vary—even among our panel members. Rankings are subjective, and there are undoubtedly 50 or more courses in the UK and USA alone that could easily fit onto this list.
