The Municipality of Stenungsund first approached Peter Nordwall, the renowned golf course architect, with a view to him designing a new 18-hole course in the local area and a steering committee was duly established in 1989 to oversee the development.

The first nine holes opened for play three years later but the original club membership was unable to raise the money to complete the 18-hole layout so the City fathers stepped in to form a new club called Stenungsund Spekeröd Golf Club (since renamed Stenungsund Golf Club) and the additional nine holes made their debut soon after.

Fairways are routed in two loops, with an inner front nine enclosed by an outer circuit of nine holes that run clockwise round the perimeter of the property. The Anråse River runs through the course, creating water hazards around greensites at a handful of holes, including the par threes at 2, 6 and 12.

Stenungsund is a fairly open course, even though it’s partly forested, with somewhat oversized greens offering a good variety of pin positions. Many regard the double doglegged, long par four 16th as a killer hole to face so late in a round and it’s one well worthy of its stroke index 1 rank on the scorecard.
