Stillwater
Donald Sechrest is a well-spread name across the Central United States, and he made his architectural debut at Stillwater Country Club in north Oklahoma. The course’s tight fairways and range of water hazards were coming into vogue at the time of the course’s 1966 opening, and it immediately attracted the NCAA Men’s National Golf Championship, as well as the Women’s AIAW National Golf Championship (a precursor to the NCAA).
There is only so much distance that can be added, however (although its current 6,500 yards play tough for their length). It would be curious to see some of Oklahoma’s acclaimed college programs take a stab at No. 15, the course’s most unique par five. Shaped like a 500-yard rainbow, the biggest hitters could conceivably play from the tee, and across two other holes, to reach the green in one fell swoop, were it not for wise tree placement. It’s the short holes that are the highlight here, however, with a range of rolling green shapes.
