Stockbridge

Dating back to 1895, Stockbridge Golf Club has played host to a number of important events down the years, including the 2008 Massachusetts Open. In 2018 the 6,659-yard course staged U.S. Open Qualifying.

The club’s original 9-hole course was set out on Prospect Hill, with additional leased land from the Dwight Meadow (the current location for holes 2 to 4) allowing the layout to be expanded in 1900. Thirty years later, the 32-acre Karrick tract (housing holes 5 to 10) was acquired and that’s essentially how things have stood since 1934.

“A member-designed facility, Stockbridge lies on essentially flat terrain, but is routed around and across the Housatonic River and its tributaries, which come into play on 13 holes,” writes Daniel Wexler in The American Private Golf Club Guide.

The author continues: “There are several fairly good holes, including the 121-yard 5th (played across the river to a narrow, waterside green), the 426-yard 17th (a 90-degree dogleg right tempting a long carry across the river) and the 425-yard finisher, which bends rightward along the hazard’s banks.”

World Top 100 Golf Courses

The latest ranking of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World serves as the ultimate global golf bucket list. Most members of our World Top 100 Panel are seasoned golfers, each playing 20-30 of these courses annually while travelling extensively over decades to form their opinions on others. We recognise that opinions vary—even among our panel members. Rankings are subjective, and there are undoubtedly 50 or more courses in the UK and USA alone that could easily fit onto this list.
