Sudurnesja Golf Club was formed in 1964 and members played over the Holmsvollur course as a 9-hole layout before it was stretched to 18 holes by the Swede Niels Skjold in 1986. The club has since established another 9-hole course called The Joel.

Hólmsvöllur was constructed on farmland and involved the removal of stonewalls and boulders before the fairways could be shaped. Back then, nobody could have believed that forty years later the course – located in the south west of Iceland, near Reykjavik International airport – would be chosen to host the 2005 Icelandic golf championships.

The signature hole at Suðurnesja, called “Bergvik”, is the par three 3rd (measuring up to 190 yards long, depending on the chosen tee) where the tee shot is flown over a sea inlet to the green – little margin for error and many balls are lost to the water, especially when the wind is up, as it often is here!

And speaking of weather, Icelandic golf is enriched not just by the landscape and the startling scenery but also by the rapid changing meteorological conditions that can occur during a typical round. The front nine might have three holes of sunshine, two of rain, one with sleet and another three holes of sleet – only for the combination to be repeated on the back nine!

Played at GS yesterday on a sunny but windy day and being the tail end of summer there were plenty of others out and about too.I only had the opportunity to play two courses whilst in Iceland and this was the weaker of the two. The other doesn't appear on this websites listing; Hella GC. Whilst I can see why it might be rated highly, being a coastal links, it appears that the 18 holes have been squeezed into far too small a space. The end result is adjoining fairways that seem to run back and forth primarily in only two directions. Yesterday that meant directly into or with the 4 club wind. Also, because the holes are so close to one another there is no real rough between them. On many holes if you miss the fairway you're playing, you end up on an adjacent fairway. My final concern was the greens which were a little 'furry' and must have had an insect infestation due to the small mounds of brown earth pushed up throughout most of the greens. The course was fine; the signature hole was a par 3 over water (over the large bay on which Reykjavik and Keflavik are sited) which was playing directly into the wind but I wouldn't play it again until I'd tried all of the Reykjavik area courses.

I am so glad to see this course on the website.I was once a member there and this is a lovely course and I always love to return. The first 3 holes are very strong,so is the finish. No weak holes there to be found and the course is playable almost all year round. The views can be fantastic:the capital Reykjavík can be seen in the distance as well as beautiful mountains (Esja and Akrafjall) and a glacier(Snæfellsjökull)...You might even spot a whale in the distance. A great course, only 5 minutes from the airport. Why not make a first stop there when arriving in Iceland? You won't be disappointed. Cédric
