Summit Golf Club
Formed in 1912, Summit Golf Club established its Richmond Hill course with the assistance of two eminent golfers of the time, Toronto Golf Club head professional George Cumming and top amateur George S. Lyon.
Seven years later, Stanley Thomson, the finest and most prolific architect of the period, reshaped the layout into the timeless classic that it has matured into.
The city of Toronto may have grown ever closer during the 100 years since The Summit was founded but this 260-acre property in the heart of the Oak Ridges Moraine remains a refuge from the hustle and bustle of an outside world, with no signs of residential development to be found within the course boundaries.
Measuring 6,938 yards from the back tees, the Summit course challenges members and their guests to a game of what might be termed cerebral golf – where accuracy is all important to golfers as they think their way around the layout.
Many of the tee positions are raised – indeed no fewer than 14 of the holes feature changes in elevation – and, unusually, there are a total of six par threes on the property (but only five feature on the scorecard as hole 5a is a spare one-shotter) so you are advised to have your short game in order if accepting an invite to play here.
Doug Carrick has significantly modified the course in recent times, renewing greens and bunkers on all eighteen holes, redesigning the 1st, 7th and 9th holes, and increasing the length to its present yardage in 2016.
