The crown jewel of the St. George Municipal courses, Sunbrook is an amazing course. Probably the St. George course I've played the most, partly because of its Utah PGA book deal, but also because it's that good. A 27-hole layout where all 3 are great, Woodbridge should be part of any golfer's round at Sunbrook, but it's hard to go wrong with any combination. All of them deliver on the St. George trademark qualities, dramatic elevation changes and great views. Those who desire a challenge will find one, while those who wish for memorable holes to play will also enjoy it too. And, as a municipal course, it's affordable too. I will be covering all 3 in this review, as I do think they're all worth checking out.
Blackrock starts basic enough, with simple and standard holes, before reaching its signature black rock holes. Entrada's Devil's triangle they are not, but they are a fun challenge in their own right without being too unfair.
Pointe also has a basic start, before it starts going uphill, culminating in its signature "Pointe" hole, offering one of the best views the course has to offer. After which, it has a dramatic downhill par 4.
Woodbridge is the best of the 3, as it starts with a bang via a dramatic downhill drive par-5. After a more simple flat par 4, the next three are some of the best, but also most challenging, holes of the course, including the "Woodbridge" that is the 9's namesake.
Notable Holes:
Blackrock 7th: Perhaps the toughest par 4 on the course, as it's a long par 4 with a large water hazard guarding the green. A par to be proud of.
Blackrock 8th: The last of the blackrock holes, it demands a long carry of the rocks to reach an elevated green.
Pointe 5th: The signature "Pointe", it's a short par 4. Don't go left, off the slope, but otherwise enjoy the view.
Woodbridge 4th: Probably the most (in)famous hole of Sunbrook, it's a long downhill island green par 3. If that sound's like a recipe for disaster, you'd be right. Getting a par or birdie deserves bragging rights with your group.
Woodbridge 5th: The "Woodbridge", starts with a drive into the ground below before requiring a long carry over some water to the green. A tough challenge as well.
Overall, Sunbrook is an exceptional course for St. George. It might not be the most consistently dramatic of courses in the area, but with its great layout and variety, it should be a great time for anybody playing. If you have the Utah PGA book Free* round promotion, you'd be crazy not to check it out (so long as you don't mind the summer restriction and heat). Even if you don't its median price range for the area and quality layout make it an easy recommendation for anybody visiting.

Championship Golf in Southern Utah The region's elite courses showcase how thoughtful design can enhance rather than compete with extraordinary natural settings. Green fees approximately £120 (€145/$165). Copper Rock Golf Course - Added to the region's elite tier recently, Copper Rock features one of Utah's finest front nines winding through classic desert terrain with mountain and cliff vistas throughout. The back nine presents more variety, though some holes feel less integrated with the natural landscape. Located 15 minutes from Sand Hollow, making it perfect for multi-course trips. Green fees approximately £100 (€120/$140). Southern Utah's Best Kept Golf Secrets Beyond the championship venues, several courses offer exceptional desert golf experiences at more accessible price points. Winter Variation: November through February offers perfect playing conditions with temperatures in the 15-20°C (60-70°F) range and courses at peak conditioning. Southern Utah Travel Logistics Getting There and Getting About Air Travel: St. George Regional Airport offers connections via Salt Lake City, providing direct London-Salt Lake-St. George routing. Las Vegas McCarran International (2 hours drive) provides more international flight options and competitive car rental rates. Ground Transportation: Rental cars are essential for course access and regional exploration. All major providers are available at both airports. Driving between courses rarely exceeds 20 minutes, with clear signage throughout the area. Weather Patterns: Peak season runs from November through March with daytime temperatures 15-22°C (60-72°F). Summer brings extreme heat (40-45°C/105-115°F) but creates low-season pricing opportunities. Pack layers for morning/evening temperature swings during winter months. Equipment Considerations: Most courses rent premium clubs, though serious players prefer bringing their own. Desert conditions can be tough on equipment – bring extra gloves and plenty of sunscreen. Spikeless shoes work well on most courses. Local Customs: Cart golf dominates due to course routing through residential areas and elevation changes. Walking is permitted but challenging on several courses. Pace of play tends to be relaxed. Where to Stay for Southern Utah Golf Resort Properties Black Desert Resort and Sand Hollow both offer on-property accommodation with golf packages. These provide convenience and often include preferential tee times. Expect resort pricing but excellent facilities and service standards. St. George City Centre Multiple hotel chains provide comfortable accommodation with easy access to restaurants and shopping. Typically 15-20 minutes from most courses. Good value option for those prioritising variety in dining and evening activities. Vacation Rentals Growing selection of houses and condos, particularly appealing for group trips. Many feature mountain views and outdoor spaces perfect for post-round relaxation. Often more economical for stays exceeding three nights. Budget-Conscious Options Several national chain hotels offer reliable accommodation at competitive rates. While lacking resort amenities, they provide excellent access to courses and outdoor recreation opportunities at significant savings. Strategic accommodation planning considers course access, dining preferences, and whether additional outdoor activities like Zion National Park visits are planned. Southern Utah's Culinary Scene St. George's rapidly growing population has brought increased dining variety, though options remain more limited than in major metropolitan areas. Upscale Dining: Several establishments now offer refined cuisine with patio dining showcasing red rock views. Local Specialities: While not known for distinctive regional cuisine, the area offers excellent steakhouses and southwestern-influenced menus. Fresh fish options are limited, but quality beef and local produce are featured prominently. Casual Options: Chain restaurants and local cafes provide reliable meals. Many golf courses feature decent grille food perfect for post-round meals. Utah Culture: The state's unique beverage culture includes creative non-alcoholic drinks ("dirty sodas") that have gained national attention. Alcohol is available, but with local regulations affecting service. Practical Dining: Grocery stores are well-stocked for self-catering options. Many accommodations include kitchen facilities, useful for extended stays or early morning pre-round fueling. Booking Golf in Southern Utah Advance Planning Requirements Championship courses require booking, particularly Black Desert and Sand Hollow, during peak winter months. Book 2-4 weeks ahead for winter play, with more flexibility during summer months. Seasonal Considerations Winter (November-March) represents peak season with premium pricing and the highest demand. Summer offers significant savings but requires early morning tee times to avoid extreme heat. Package Opportunities Resort properties often provide multi-course packages, including accommodation. These typically offer better value than individual bookings while guaranteeing access to premium courses. Local Booking Tips Municipal courses (Green Spring, SunBrook, Sky Mountain) accept walk-ups more readily and offer excellent value. The Ledges typically have good availability due to its Hurricane location. Private course access (Entrada) requires an accommodation booking. Weather Contingencies Courses rarely close for weather, though extreme winds can affect mountain courses. Summer lightning represents the main weather concern, typically occurring mid-to-late afternoon. Explore Beyond Golf Zion National Park Forty minutes from St. George, this iconic national park requires advance permits during peak seasons. The Narrows hike and Angels Landing offer world-class outdoor experiences. A full day is recommended for proper exploration. Red Rock Recreation Off-road vehicle tours and rentals are popular throughout the area. Sand Hollow State Park offers boating, swimming, and ATV/UTV access directly from some resort properties. Equipment rental is readily available. Cultural Attractions Pioneer history exhibits and geological formations provide educational opportunities. The area's Mormon pioneer heritage creates unique historical perspectives throughout the region. Adventure Activities Rock climbing, mountain biking, and hiking trails are abundant. Professional guide services are available for technical activities. Many trails offer spectacular views requiring minimal technical skills. Insider Local Knowledge Common Visitor Mistakes Underestimating summer heat intensity – temperatures above 40°C (105°F) make afternoon golf extremely challenging even for experienced desert players. Always book the earliest possible tee times during the summer months. Local Advantages Winter represents ideal playing conditions with perfect weather and courses at peak conditioning. Many northern Utah golfers migrate south during the winter months, creating knowledgeable local networks happy to share course insights. Strategic Planning Combining golf with outdoor recreation creates the most memorable experiences. Allow flexibility in scheduling to take advantage of optimal weather windows for both golf and outdoor activities. Money-Saving Strategies Summer travel reduces accommodation and golf costs by 30-50% but requires early morning tee times. Multi-course packages often provide better value than individual bookings. Municipal courses deliver exceptional experiences at a fraction of resort pricing. Southern Utah offers extraordinary desert golf experiences across all budget levels, with the dramatic red rock scenery providing unforgettable memories regardless of spending tier. The combination of accessible courses, reliable weather, and unique landscape creates one of America's most distinctive golf destinations. Salt Lake City represents one of America's most underrated golf destinations, where visitors discover championship-quality mountain golf without resort pricing. The setting alone justifies the journey - courses carved into mountainsides with unobstructed views across sprawling valleys and the Great Salt Lake. Most remarkably, top-tier facilities offer exceptional value, making this an accessible destination for serious golfers. Dramatic elevation changes - Courses range from 4,400 feet in the valley to 7,000 feet in Park City mountains Year-round mountain activities - Ski world-class resorts in the morning, golf in the afternoon during spring season Exceptional value - Championship courses with minimal tourist crowds outside ski season USGA Championship pedigree - Soldier Hollow remains Utah's only facility to host a USGA Championship Unique terrain variety - True mountain golf, links-style valley courses, and lakefront layouts all within an hour Utah's Best Golf Courses The cream of Salt Lake City golf centres around Park City's private clubs, where serious architectural talent has created memorable mountain experiences. Private club access in the United States proves notoriously difficult for travelling golfers without proper introductions, making Salt Lake City's exceptional public facilities even more valuable. Glenwild Golf Club - Tom Fazio's masterpiece sits atop Utah's rankings for excellent reason. This Park City private club delivers thoughtful mountain golf without gimmicks, using dramatic elevation changes intelligently rather than relying on tricks. The routing flows naturally across mountainous terrain, offering spectacular valley views while maintaining strategic interest throughout. Victory Ranch - Another Park City private gem designed by Rees Jones. The layout combines classic design principles with mountain terrain, creating memorable holes that challenge better players while remaining enjoyable for all skill levels. The setting overlooks vast mountain vistas that epitomise Utah golf. Salt Lake Country Club - Utah's oldest club brings traditional golf to downtown Salt Lake City, cleverly using a dramatic cliff feature running through the property. Players navigate above and below this natural barrier, creating unique strategic decisions rarely found elsewhere. The historic layout demonstrates how classic design principles adapt to challenging mountain terrain. Promontory Club - Features both Jack Nicklaus and Pete Dye courses in the Park City area, though these rank slightly below the "big three" architecturally while still offering spectacular mountain golf experiences. Northern Utah's Best Public Golf Salt Lake City's accessible courses deliver remarkable mountain golf experiences without the exclusivity challenges that plague American private clubs. Soldier Hollow Gold Course and Silver Course - Northern Utah's finest public golf experience demands playing both courses. The only facility in Utah to host a USGA Championship, Soldier Hollow offers championship-style layouts with polished conditioning and strategic design that surpass other regional public options. The Gold and Silver courses complement each other perfectly - leaving one unplayed feels incomplete, like abandoning a meal halfway through. These sister layouts sit in Heber Valley, offering stunning mountain settings without the pretentious atmosphere found at some premium facilities. Wasatch Mountain State Park - Mountain Course and Lake Course - Quintessential Utah golf, climbing high into the mountains. Both courses offer secluded settings with dramatic elevation changes and pristine wilderness views. The Mountain Course provides more extreme elevation play, while the Lake Course offers slightly gentler terrain but equally spectacular vistas. These state park gems deliver authentic mountain golf at remarkable value. Park City Golf Course - A fun mountain track offering public access in Park City proper. While perhaps not as memorable as Soldier Hollow or Wasatch Mountain, this course provides solid mountain golf in a resort town setting. Bonneville Golf Course - The classic 1929 municipal layout near the University of Utah represents a rite of passage for local golfers. This accessible course provides unique, fun golf right in Salt Lake City, perfect for understanding local golf culture. Its location near downtown makes it ideal for warm-up rounds or fitting in an extra 18 holes. Bountiful Ridge Golf Course - Mountain golf with spectacular Great Salt Lake views. Positioned on elevated terrain overlooking the lake, this parkland-style course blends traditional design with a mountain setting, creating a unique Utah golf experience. Eagle Mountain Golf Course - A worthy pairing with Bountiful Ridge, though the layouts share similar characteristics. Both offer quality valley golf with mountain backdrops, making them excellent options for golfers seeking multiple rounds in the northern suburbs. Stonebridge Golf Club - The closest course to Salt Lake City International Airport, featuring 27 holes where water features prominently - a refreshing change from the dry mountain courses dominating the region. The convenient location makes it perfect for arrival or departure day rounds. Hidden Gems Worth the Journey Hobble Creek Golf Course - Located in Utah County, this course delivers excellent value and a welcoming atmosphere without the snobbish pretension sometimes found at big-name facilities. The slightly longer drive from Salt Lake City rewards golfers with quality golf and genuine hospitality. Talons Cove Golf Club - Another Utah County gem offering superior bang for your buck compared to more prominent courses. The lakefront setting along Utah Lake provides beautiful views across the water to the Wasatch Front mountains. The drive south proves worthwhile for golfers seeking quality without attitude. Birch Creek Golf Course - Two hours north near Logan, this municipal gem uses natural terrain brilliantly. A singular barranca feature winds through the front nine, creating strategic interest across multiple holes in ways rarely achieved by modern municipal courses. Authentic local golf experience away from tourist areas. Old Mill Golf Course - South Salt Lake Valley location offering tremendous valley views and solid golf design. Local favourite that demonstrates Utah's depth of quality public facilities. Sample Itinerary: 5-Day Salt Lake City Golf Adventure Day 1 - Arrival & Airport Proximity Fly into Salt Lake City International Airport and collect rental car. Play Stonebridge Golf Club's 27-hole layout - the closest course to the airport offers a water-filled introduction contrasting with the mountain courses ahead. Alternatively, head straight to Park City accommodation (40 minutes) and settle in for the mountain golf to come. Day 2 - The Soldier Hollow Experience Early start to Heber Valley for both Soldier Hollow courses. Play the Gold Course morning round, lunch at the clubhouse, then tackle the Silver Course afternoon. Utah's only USGA Championship facility deserves the full treatment - both courses showcase why this represents Northern Utah's finest public golf. Evening in Park City exploring the Olympic Village and mountain town atmosphere. Day 3 - State Park Mountain Golf Wasatch Mountain State Park beckons with both the Mountain and Lake courses. The extreme elevation changes and wilderness settings on the Mountain Course contrast beautifully with the Lake Course's slightly gentler but equally scenic terrain. Both provide quintessential Utah mountain golf experiences. Day 4 - Valley Views & Local Favourites Morning round at Bountiful Ridge for Great Salt Lake views and classic mountain parkland golf. Afternoon at Eagle Mountain Golf Course for similar quality with different perspectives. Alternatively, venture south to pair Old Mill and South Mountain for exceptional valley views. Evening exploring downtown Salt Lake City and Temple Square. Day 5 - Rite of Passage & Departure Final round at Bonneville Golf Course - the 1929 municipal layout near the University of Utah provides a perfect bookend to the trip, offering insight into local golf culture before heading to the airport. Time permitting, Stonebridge's proximity to the airport allows for afternoon departure flights. Alternative Extended Itinerary: Replace Day 4 with Utah County exploration - play Hobble Creek and Talons Cove for excellent value and welcoming atmospheres. Or venture north to Birch Creek Golf Course (2-hour drive) for authentic municipal golf showcasing brilliant use of natural terrain. Salt Lake City Travel Logistics Transportation - Rental cars prove absolutely essential for Salt Lake City golf. Courses spread across mountainous terrain require driving, plus rental cars enable scenic mountain road exploration and access to hiking, skiing, and other outdoor activities. Salt Lake City International Airport offers all major rental companies. Weather & Packing - Golf season runs March through November, with courses closing during snowy winter months. Prime conditions occur during autumn (late September through early November) when temperatures moderate and fall colours peak. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 35°C (95°F) despite the mountain setting, requiring sun protection and lightweight long sleeves. Spring and autumn demand layering as weather can change rapidly - snow possible even in May. Equipment - Golf cart culture dominates due to extreme elevation changes, making walking extremely challenging. Few courses offer caddie services. Club rental is available at most facilities, though serious golfers prefer travelling with their own equipment, given the unique mountain conditions and elevation adjustments needed. Unique Opportunities - Spring season (April-May) enables skiing in the morning followed by afternoon golf - a rare combination available at few destinations worldwide. Six world-class ski resorts sit within an hour of the airport. Course Elevations - Salt Lake City courses range from 4,400 feet (valley courses) to 7,000 feet (Park City mountain courses). Ball flight changes significantly at altitude, generally adding 10-15% distance. Where to Stay for Salt Lake City Golf Park City Resort Area represents the premium option for serious golfers, positioning visitors 40 minutes from the airport amongst the region's finest courses. This Olympic host city provides upscale accommodation, mountain town atmosphere, and access to both private clubs (with proper introductions) and nearby state park courses. Park City also offers extensive mountain biking, hiking, and scenic mountain road access. Heber Valley sits between Salt Lake City and Park City, providing direct access to Soldier Hollow and Wasatch Mountain state park courses - the region's finest public golf. This location offers more affordable accommodation than Park City while positioning golfers perfectly for Northern Utah's must-play facilities. Salt Lake City Metro Area provides budget-friendly alternatives while maintaining access to all courses within an hour's drive. Downtown Salt Lake City hotels offer urban amenities and proximity to Temple Square cultural attractions, though visitors sacrifice the mountain town experience. The metro location proves ideal for golfers planning to explore valley courses like Old Mill, South Mountain, Bountiful Ridge, and Eagle Mountain. Vacation Rentals throughout the mountains provide authentic local experiences, particularly valuable for groups planning extended stays to explore both golf and outdoor activities. Salt Lake City's Culinary Scene Salt Lake City's dining culture has evolved beyond chain restaurants, with several local institutions delivering memorable meals that complement a golf-focused visit. Must-Try Local Restaurants: The Red Iguana - Two locations near Salt Lake City airport serve outstanding Mexican cuisine that ranks amongst the region's finest dining experiences. The authentic flavours and generous portions make this a post-round favourite. Cotton Bottom Inn - This Holladay dive bar serves one item: an incredible hamburger. The no-frills atmosphere and singular focus on perfecting one dish create a quintessential local experience that embodies Salt Lake's unpretentious character. No Name Saloon (Park City) - The Buffalo Burger alone justifies a visit to this Park City institution. The relaxed mountain town atmosphere and hearty portions suit post-round appetites perfectly. The Pie Pizzeria - Multiple locations serve Utah's interpretation of deep dish pizza, with the original near the University of Utah maintaining the most authentic character. Local favourite that provides casual, satisfying meals. Dirty Soda Culture - Unique to Utah, "dirty soda" shops dot the valley, serving elaborate soda combinations with multiple flavourings, creamers, and additions. These drive-through establishments reflect local Mormon culture's approach to non-alcoholic beverages, creating a distinctly Utah experience worth sampling for cultural insight. Chain Restaurant Availability - From upscale national chains to fast-casual favourites, Salt Lake City offers comprehensive American dining options for those seeking familiar choices. Post-Round Dining - Most courses feature standard American clubhouse fare. Park City offers more upscale dining experiences befitting its resort town status, while valley courses typically provide casual American options. Alcohol Service - Utah's liquor laws create unique dining experiences, with some establishments requiring food orders with alcoholic beverages and specific service protocols that may surprise visitors from other regions. Booking Golf in Salt Lake City Private Club Access requires proper introductions through club members or golf professionals - significantly more challenging in the United States than in many international destinations. Glenwild, Victory Ranch, and Salt Lake Country Club maintain strict member-guest policies. Travelling golfers should focus on Salt Lake City's exceptional public facilities rather than relying on private club access. State Park Courses accept advance bookings through the Utah State Parks reservation system. Soldier Hollow and Wasatch Mountain courses book several weeks ahead during the peak autumn season, though spring and summer typically offer good availability. These represent must-play destinations that warrant advance planning. Public Course Booking - Most municipal and daily fee courses accept online bookings 7-14 days in advance. Weekend tee times during prime season (September-October) require advance planning. Seasonal Considerations - Courses close completely during winter months (typically late November through March). Spring opening depends on snow conditions and can vary significantly year to year. Autumn provides the most reliable booking with consistent weather patterns. Local Knowledge - Contacting courses directly often yields better availability and local knowledge about conditions, especially during shoulder seasons when weather can affect playability. Explore Beyond Golf Olympic Legacy - Park City's Olympic Village from 2002 Winter Olympics offers tours, museums, and historic venues. The Utah Olympic Park provides year-round activities including bobsled rides and ski jumping demonstrations. Natural Wonders - Six world-class ski resorts within an hour provide summer mountain activities including scenic chairlift rides, mountain biking, and hiking trails. Big Cottonwood Canyon and Little Cottonwood Canyon offer spectacular mountain driving and wilderness access. Temple Square - Downtown Salt Lake City's Mormon cultural centre features impressive architecture, the famous Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and guided tours explaining the region's unique religious and cultural history. Great Salt Lake - Though known for strong odours, the massive saltwater lake provides unique natural experiences and scenic viewing points, particularly at sunset. Mountain Activities - The Wasatch Range offers unlimited hiking, mountain biking, and scenic driving opportunities. Alta, Snowbird, Park City, and Deer Valley ski resorts transform into summer recreation areas. Insider Local Knowledge Soldier Hollow Priority - Experienced Utah golfers universally recommend playing both Soldier Hollow courses in a single visit. The Gold and Silver layouts complement each other perfectly, and leaving one unplayed means missing half of Utah's finest public golf experience. Elevation Adjustments - Ball flight changes dramatically at altitude. Expect 10-15% increased distance, with even more significant changes at Park City's 7,000-foot courses. Club selection becomes crucial for accurate distance control. Weather Variability - Mountain weather changes rapidly. Even summer rounds can encounter sudden temperature drops or brief precipitation. Always pack layers and rain protection regardless of morning conditions. Pace Expectations - Golf cart mandatory culture and tourist-friendly atmosphere create relaxed pace expectations. Four-and-a-half hour rounds prove normal, particularly at state park courses popular with local families. Local Etiquette - Utah's predominantly Mormon culture creates courteous, family-friendly golf environments. Language and behaviour standards tend toward conservative, though visitors experience warm hospitality regardless of background. Tee Time Strategy - Book earliest possible tee times during summer months to avoid afternoon heat. Autumn and spring offer all-day comfort but require advance booking for weekend play. Value vs Prestige - Some prominent courses charge premium rates without delivering proportional value. Local favourites like Hobble Creek, Talons Cove, Old Mill, and South Mountain offer superior experiences without pretentious atmospheres, demonstrating that Utah's best golf values often lie beyond the biggest names. Private Club Reality - Unlike some international destinations where travelling golfers access private clubs relatively easily, American private facilities maintain strict guest policies. Focus planning around Salt Lake City's exceptional public courses rather than counting on private club access. Budget Planning & Travel Value Exceptional Value Proposition - Salt Lake City demonstrates remarkable affordability compared to other American mountain golf destinations. State park courses deliver championship-quality mountain golf at public facility pricing, while municipal options provide budget-friendly alternatives. Even premium public courses offer challenging championship layouts without resort destination pricing. Soldier Hollow Investment - Playing both Soldier Hollow courses in one day represents Northern Utah's best golf investment. The only Utah facility to host a USGA Championship delivers quality that justifies prioritising both layouts over mixing in lesser alternatives. Accommodation Strategy - Heber Valley positioning provides direct access to Soldier Hollow and Wasatch Mountain while offering more affordable accommodation than Park City. Budget-conscious golfers staying in the Salt Lake City metro area maintain access to excellent valley courses and can still reach mountain facilities within an hour. Money-Saving Strategies - Playing weekday rounds at state park courses, combining multiple rounds at Soldier Hollow and Wasatch Mountain for package opportunities, and staying in Heber Valley rather than Park City all maximise value. Spring and late autumn offer reduced accommodation rates alongside excellent playing conditions. Value-First Course Selection - Courses like Hobble Creek, Talons Cove, Old Mill, and South Mountain deliver exceptional experiences without premium pricing or pretentious atmospheres. These represent smarter investments than some big-name courses charging significantly more for comparable or lesser quality. Multi-Day Planning - The concentration of quality courses within an hour enables efficient multi-day itineraries. Golfers can play 36 holes daily at facilities like Soldier Hollow and Wasatch Mountain, maximising time and value during extended visits. The Verdict Salt Lake City rewards travelling golfers with a rare combination of championship mountain golf, dramatic natural beauty, and exceptional value that enables extended play without resort destination pricing. The unique opportunity to combine world-class skiing with mountain golf during the spring season, plus authentic local dining and outdoor recreation opportunities, creates a distinctive American golf destination that serious golfers discover and return to repeatedly. Most importantly, the region's public facilities rival or exceed private clubs elsewhere, eliminating the access challenges that frustrate travelling golfers at many American destinations.
A good halfway house can turn a great round of golf into a memorable one. It might be a cold beer on a Scottish links, a burger with a spectacular view or a hot drink to warm you up before the back nine. Whatever is on offer, the best halfway houses give golfers a chance to forget about the scorecard for a few minutes and enjoy the experience. We recently asked the Top100 Golf Courses community to share their favourite halfway houses, uncovering plenty of memorable stops around the world. We've picked five of their recommendations, alongside five more renowned halfway houses that are well worth knowing about. What is a Halfway House? A halfway house is a food and drink stop positioned around the turn of a golf course, usually between the ninth and 10th holes. Some are little more than a hut serving snacks and drinks, while others have become destinations in their own right, offering everything from full meals and cocktails to fires, views and plenty of local character. Five Halfway Houses Chosen by the Top100 Community Sunningdale Golf Club (England) There is a reason the halfway hut at Sunningdale has become one of the most famous refreshment stops in golf. The small Swiss-chalet-style building has been in place since 1903, sitting where the ninth holes of both the Old and New Courses meet their respective 10th holes. But the building itself isn't the main attraction. That would be the sausage sandwich. Sunningdale's legendary hut serves a simple sausage on buttered bread, with other food and refreshments available alongside it. The hut has become such an established part of the experience that the club's own tradition says everybody stops, but does so speedily. It's not fancy, and that's rather the point. After nine holes of heather-lined fairways, a hot sausage sandwich and a cup of tea can feel like exactly what golf ordered. Nairn Golf Club - The Bothy at Nairn (Scotland) The Bothy at Nairn has a history that goes well beyond golf. Built in 1877, the stone building and neighbouring icehouse formed part of the Easter Delnies Fishing Station, one of five salmon fisheries operating along the coast between Nairn and the mouth of the Findhorn. In a good season, the fishery could catch up to 5,000 salmon, with ice collected from local rivers and a specially made pond and stored in the icehouse to keep the catch fresh. The buildings have since been given a new lease of life, with the Bothy converted into a halfway house where golfers can stop for snacks and refreshments at the turn. On a cold day beside the Moray Firth, there's also a fireplace to warm up beside. The historic stone building, Highland setting and views across the course provide plenty of atmosphere. One of our community members put it rather simply: a dram of whisky and a fire are hard to beat. Hard to argue with that. Turnberry Ailsa (Scotland) Turnberry's halfway house is about as far removed from the traditional golf hut as you can get. The Ailsa's ninth hole now finishes beside the famous Turnberry Lighthouse, which doubles as a halfway house for golfers. The lighthouse itself dates back to 1873, while the golf course's dramatic ninth was redesigned as part of the Ailsa's major renovation. Inside, golfers can stop for food and drink before heading to the 10th, but the real attraction is outside. From the lighthouse, there are views across the Firth of Clyde towards the Isle of Arran and Ailsa Craig. It's a halfway stop that feels more like a destination than a quick pit stop. When your halfway house is a historic lighthouse overlooking one of Scotland's most spectacular stretches of coastline, you've got a pretty good excuse to take your time. Ardglass Golf Club (Northern Ireland) At Ardglass, the halfway-house experience is wonderfully straightforward: have a Guinness and enjoy the view. The course's old cottage halfway house at the back of the 7th green has become one of its most memorable features, with golfers able to stop for a pint before continuing their round. A recent visitor described it as a gorgeous cottage with Guinness, while another praised the combination of a Guinness, sausage roll and views over the Irish Sea. It fits Ardglass perfectly. The County Down links is already one of the most dramatic places to play golf in Northern Ireland, with the Irish Sea never far away. Add a pint of Guinness just before the turn and you've got a halfway house that feels distinctly of its surroundings. Sometimes you don't need to reinvent the wheel. Blair Atholl Golf Estate (South Africa) Blair Atholl might have been one of the less obvious names to appear among the community recommendations, but the descriptions made it impossible to leave out. The halfway stop sounds less like a quick break and more like an event. One golfer highlighted the chicken burger, a chef cooking a barbecue beneath the trees and a deck sitting beneath a stream. Another mentioned silver-service high tea. That's quite the halfway-house menu. It's also a good example of why the best stops aren't necessarily the most famous. A halfway house can become memorable because of the food, the setting or simply the feeling that you're being looked after rather than rushed back onto the course. Five More Renowned Halfway Houses St Andrews Links - The Old Course (Scotland) If we're talking about halfway houses, it makes sense to visit the place that has a claim to starting the tradition. In the 19th century, David "Old Da" Anderson sold ginger beer and other refreshments from a cart on the Old Course at St Andrews. It has been described as golf's first refreshment stand. The modern version sits behind the ninth green and keeps the tradition going, albeit with a rather more substantial menu. The pork and haggis sausage roll is a popular choice, while the club's own Tom Morris 1821 Lager provides a suitably Scottish accompaniment. It's difficult to think of a more fitting place for a halfway stop. The Old Course is steeped in golfing history, and even the break between nines has a story of its own. Pine Valley Golf Club (New Jersey, United States) Pine Valley's halfway house is memorable before you've even ordered anything. Rather than a conventional hut, it is built into the base of an old water tower, which golfers encounter around the eighth hole and again near the 12th tee. It's an appropriately unusual feature for one of the world's most unconventional golf courses. The tower doubles as a stop for drinks and snacks, giving golfers a chance to take a breather before continuing around Pine Valley. It even boasts an impressive collection of golf balls from around the world. There aren't many halfway houses that can claim to be built inside a water tower. Quivira Golf Club (Baja California Sur, Mexico) Quivira has taken the halfway-house concept and spread it across the entire round. The Jack Nicklaus-designed course has multiple all-inclusive comfort stations, each offering golfers food and drinks as they make their way around the Cabo San Lucas layout. The most spectacular is The Cliffs, perched almost 300 feet above the Pacific, where golfers can stop for a breakfast burrito and take in the views over the ocean. Then there's The Oasis, the main halfway house near the ninth green. Here, the emphasis is on the food, with freshly prepared Baja cuisine including tacos and tostadas, alongside a full tequila bar. A final stop, Cañada, sits near the 16th tee, while another comfort station beside the oceanfront practice facility offers snacks and cold drinks before golfers even reach the first tee. The food and refreshments are included in the green fee, making Quivira's comfort stations much more than somewhere to grab a quick drink. Tacos, tequila and spectacular Pacific Ocean views make the breaks almost as memorable as the golf. Whistling Rock Country Club (South Korea) At Whistling Rock, there isn't just one halfway house to look forward to. The South Korean club is made up of three nine-hole loops, each with its own themed tea house: Cocoon, Temple and Cloud. The three buildings are each distinctly different. One is a rounded structure between a lake and forest, another is a formal wood-and-glass building, while the Cloud tea house sits high among the trees. The result is a halfway-house experience that feels distinctly different depending on which nine you're playing, with each tea house adding another layer to the Whistling Rock experience. Royal Dornoch Golf Club (Scotland) Royal Dornoch's halfway house is proof that sometimes the best idea is a simple one. The stop sits behind the ninth green of the Championship Course, with views back across the links towards the Dornoch Firth. And then there's the traditional order: hot chocolate with Bailey's Irish Cream, a combination that makes considerably more sense when you're standing on a Scottish links in a North Sea wind. It's a small detail, but one that has become part of the Royal Dornoch experience and exactly the sort of halfway-house tradition golfers remember.
