Sutton Green

Sutton Green Golf Club celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2019 so the course is yet another of the many that sprung up during the golf boom in the 1990s, with holes set out on what were formerly the White House Farm and Loampits Farm estates.

Planning permission was granted in June 1992, with construction starting in May the following year. By the end of 1994, work was finished on the layout and the doors were opened for business.

Headline designer Laura Davies kindly donated a trophy for competition and it’s played for annually in a Mixed Pairs event.

Course improvements that have since taken place include major drainage projects to both fairways and bunkers, lengthening of some holes with new tees, and management of trees and hedges around the property.

The course now measures 6,433 yards from the back markers, with par set at 71, and holes laid out in two returning circuits. Water comes into play in one form or another on half the holes.

Highlight holes include the 363-yard 4th, which turns 90 degrees left to the green, and the 431-yard 9th, where a large lake lurks along the right hand side of the fairway.

The tee shot at the 395-yard 14th plays over a small lake that shouldn’t cause any interference but the pond to the front right of the green might. The gently right doglegging 18th then returns to a large, bunkerless home green which offers a genuine birdie chance at the last.
