Sweetgrass
Many courses feature template holes among their selection of par threes, but few feature holes from the diverse timelines of both C.B. Macdonald and Pete Dye. Sweetgrass Golf Club was laid out by two of Dye’s longtime associates, Chris Lutzke and Paul Albanese, who were familiar enough with the history of the game to bring the charm of each to the club.
On the classic side of the template equation are holes designed after the iconic Redan and Biarritz. Dye certainly presented alternative interpretations of the former at his own courses, but the latter is a relative rarity among modern architects. Taking after their former boss, Albanese and Lutzke tweak the Biarritz concept so that it’s at an angle from the player. As for the Dye template? An island green, of course, featured at No. 15.
The course is owned and operated by the Hannahville Native American community, with hole names and stories intended to educate golfers throughout the round.
