Situated just a five-minute drive from downtown Vermillion, The Bluffs Golf Course is an upscale public facility that’s been serving golfers since 1996. With water in play at seven of the holes, the layout needs to be treated with respect.
Extending to 6,684 yards from the back tees and playing to a par of 72, the course is routed around a residential community, with housing units located at a discreet distance close to several of the fairways. Four holes are played on flatter terrain at the foot of the bluffs, on the south side of the property.
Host of the South Dakota Open, The Bluffs is an unassuming course with a handful of solid holes. The main focal point of the course is the dramatic 13th, with over a 75ft drop to the fairway from the tee box. The rest of the course leaves something to be desired, with no real visual or architectural elements to keep the mind on its toes. Water hazards are abundant, which one could argue the course would be better off without had it utilized the land differently. However, the course is always in good shape, and the setup provides scoring opportunities should you hit the ball where you are looking. Golfers finding themselves off their game will quickly rack up double, triple, or quadruple bogies thanks to the abundant penalty areas and trees.
