The Dyke Golf Club was formed in 1906, but the layout was destroyed by practicing tanks and was rebuilt after the war by Fred G. Hawtree and his son Fred W. Frank Pennink described it as “undoubtedly the best of the courses in the Brighton orbit”.

The views from the Dyke are wonderful. You've got the English Channel stretching from the Isle of Wight on a clear day across to Brighton and beyond. The course has played magnificently well this summer, the greens are quick and true. There are some tricky slopes and you have to play a links type game to get close in, especially if the wind is blowing. The wind is the main defence of the course. It makes a couple of the straightforward par4s and 5s card wreckers. And even on a calm day, the par 3s are hard to hit. Overall, this course is a gem. It can be brutal at times, but the course keeps bringing you back. Long hitters may find the course short when no wind. But there are enough hazards, even though the fairways are quite generous at times, to keep even the big hitters on their toes. The restructuring of the bunkers has worked really well, they are a test but a good bunker shot can be rewarded. The contouring of the fairways has also looked magnificent this year. There is a half way hut, the turn is at the club house, and there is a tap at the 7th/12th tees. The clubhouse is welcoming and the balcony is a pleasure to sit on.

The latest ranking of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World serves as the ultimate global golf bucket list. Most members of our World Top 100 Panel are seasoned golfers, each playing 20-30 of these courses annually while travelling extensively over decades to form their opinions on others. We recognise that opinions vary—even among our panel members. Rankings are subjective, and there are undoubtedly 50 or more courses in the UK and USA alone that could easily fit onto this list.
