The Foundry
Located south of the James River in Powhaten County, The Foundry Golf Club’s course was designed by local developer and one of the founding members, J. K. Timmons, a retired civil engineer, along with his son Jeffrey.
They routed the fairways through the winding wetland areas of Fine Creek, calling in architect Raymond Franklin Loving Jnr – whose father worked with the prolific designer Fred Findlay – to approve their work.
The holes are set out on naturally rolling terrain, doglegging left and right then rising and falling with subtle changes in elevation. Properly judged approach shots are all-important here as the greens are small and heavily contoured.
It’s a walking course, with short walks from green to tee, and the club operates a top class caddie program which helps to maintain a respectable pace of play – as many would say: “golf as it should be”.
The layout can be stretched to 6,901 yards from the back markers and highlight holes include the short par four 4th, the longest par five on the card at the 597-yard 8th and the shortest of the four par threes at the 153-yard 17th.
World Top 100 Golf Courses
The latest ranking of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World serves as the ultimate global golf bucket list. Most members of our World Top 100 Panel are seasoned golfers, each playing 20-30 of these courses annually while travelling extensively over decades to form their opinions on others. We recognise that opinions vary—even among our panel members. Rankings are subjective, and there are undoubtedly 50 or more courses in the UK and USA alone that could easily fit onto this list.
