The Shoals (Fighting Joe)
If you like it long, and we mean seriously long, then you’ll love the RTJ Trail’s 8,092-yard Fighting Joe golf course at The Shoals. Named after the Confederate General, Joseph "Fighting Joe" Wheeler, only play this track from the tips if your nickname is “Bubba”.
Two courses operate from The Shoals, which is located between the Wheeler and Wilson dams on the Tennessee River. Fighting Joe was first to open for play in 2004, followed a year later by the slightly shorter “Schoolmaster” layout, named after President Woodrow Wilson, the so-called schoolmaster of politics.
Three of the four par fives on the card measure in excess of 600 yards so it’s probably no surprise to learn that they’re also rated index 1, 2 and 3 on the stroke index. The remaining par five, the 592-yard 17th, is regarded as the signature hole on the course, playing to a pond-protected green with sand bunkers as a second line of defence.
World Top 100 Golf Courses
The latest ranking of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World serves as the ultimate global golf bucket list. Most members of our World Top 100 Panel are seasoned golfers, each playing 20-30 of these courses annually while travelling extensively over decades to form their opinions on others. We recognise that opinions vary—even among our panel members. Rankings are subjective, and there are undoubtedly 50 or more courses in the UK and USA alone that could easily fit onto this list.
