The Tribute

The Colony, a suburb north of Dallas, features two golf clubs designed by Tripp Davis. One is the semi-private Old American club and its next door neighbor is The Tribute, an 18-hole greatest hits compilation of the best golf holes of the British Isles.

Although the Texas landscape won’t quite provide the bounce of links golf, the winds coming off of Lewisville Lake can be quite convincing. Other than that, Davis did his best to emulate the classic holes, including positioning a maintenance shed to represent the hotel at the corner of No. 17’s Road Hole.

Want some insight into what the architect’s favorite linksland hole is? We have a hunch, based on the name of No. 14. “Tripp’s Favorite.” It certainly implies Davis is fond of its inspiration, No. 13 at Muirfield. We do have one wee complaint: The “Postage Stamp” green seems considerably more welcoming than the same hole at Troon.

When the PGA opens its new headquarters in nearby Frisco, those who have tired of the brand’s American golf can head over to The Tribute for at least a whiff of the old world’s game.
