English golf course architect Jeremy Pern – resident for a number of years now in Toulouse, south west France – has over thirty courses to his name throughout Europe and in 2005 he added Toya in Lower Silesia to his considerable portfolio.
Toya Golf & Country Club is situated to the north of Wroclaw city center and both members and visiting golfers have the option of warming up either on the driving range or a short 9-hole layout before tackling the 18-hole championship course.
The holes are laid out on a former military training ground and it is alleged that, in addition to moving earth to add some definition to a largely level, featureless tract of land, the architect retained some old bomb blast and tank trap indentations to create a rather unique golfing landscape!
Apart from the closing holes on each nine, water comes into play at holes 5 to 7 and between the 13th and 16th holes – this stretch of holes on the inward half also winds its way through a residential housing development at the most southerly position on the property.
