Nestled on Lake Travis's shores in the Texas Hill Country, the Travis Club is architect Beau Welling's most ambitious project yet. This 1,500-acre community features an 18-hole championship layout opening late 2025, utilising dramatic elevation changes and 10,000 feet of lakefront to create an exceptional golf holiday destination.
Travis Club marks the latest addition to Texas's burgeoning Hill Country golf scene, representing what architect Beau Welling describes as the project he's "been preparing for my whole career." Located on a spectacular 1,500-acre site along Lake Travis's southwestern shore, this ambitious development promises to redefine luxury golf in the Austin area.
The project combines championship golf with one of Texas's most coveted lakefront locations, boasting 10,000 feet of pristine Lake Travis waterfront just 24km (15 miles) west of downtown Austin.
Travis Club's development began with a vision to create Texas's premier private golf community on what is the last significant developable land along Lake Travis. The project gained momentum in 2023 when Welling conducted extensive site visits, followed by the ceremonial groundbreaking on April 23, 2024.
Welling's design philosophy centres on integrating the course seamlessly with the Hill Country's natural topography and Lake Travis's dramatic shoreline. The par-72 championship layout takes full advantage of the property's significant elevation changes and diverse terrain, ranging from lakefront holes to elevated positions offering panoramic vistas.
"Our goals with the design were to honor the stunning Hill Country landscape along Lake Travis and create a course that people would enjoy playing time and time again, regardless of their skill level." The routing incorporates strategic challenges while maintaining playability across different skill levels through multiple tee options.
Senior designer Scott Benson assists Welling in bringing the vision to life, with the team drawing upon their successful collaborations at Bluejack National and Fields Ranch West at PGA Frisco. The signature fifth hole, a thrilling par 3 played across a scenic cove, exemplifies the dramatic lakefront settings that define the Travis Club experience.
The course design showcases Welling's expertise in utilising natural terrain features to create memorable golf experiences. The routing takes advantage of the property's dramatic elevation changes, creating holes that offer both strategic interest and spectacular views of Lake Travis and the surrounding Hill Country.
The lakefront holes represent particular highlights, with several playing directly along the water's edge. The natural limestone outcroppings characteristic of the Texas Hill Country serve as both design elements and natural hazards, requiring careful navigation while adding visual drama to the layout.
Welling's approach emphasises sustainability and environmental sensitivity, with the design carefully routed around existing oak groves and natural features. The course incorporates native vegetation and requires minimal earth movement, preserving the site's natural character while creating an exceptional golf experience.
