I played one time in Troia at middle of July and was bit disappointed. Maybe concerning middle summer heat and average field supervision golf course was not expected condition as one of the lead courses in Portugal. My opinion it is bit overrated and overpriced golf course in Portugal. At the same time played in several other golf courses at Lisbon region and find much more better fields condition. First of all for the requested price they must try to organize and maintain an appropriate level. Clubhouse is new and nice with huge area for proshop and restaurant. Actually the golf club was empty enough and during all day we met only few other golfers. It was not bad for us to enjoy and play quiet without traffic jam, but bit strange for top rated golf course.
Troia championship 18-hole and par 72 golf course is alongside the beach with a dazzling view of the Arrábida Mountain. Concerning architecture and picturesque this golf course is very nice. But in other hand some of inlands holes are boring without any attractive view.
In general condition of fields and surroundings were average with many burnt-out areas, greens also. Fairways with some laps of ground, but playable. Around few construction works and not finished property.
Golf course is challenging at all. First three holes really nice and interesting where you must thinking about strategy to play risky or save game. The tee on the first hole of 473 metres and a par 5 requires water to be carried and with a green with many protective bunkers. Hole 3, a par 4 that fits perfectly in the landscape with a magnificent sea view, was one of the best here. Hole 18 is a par 5 left dog-leg, with an elevated green and protected by three front bunkers, but good opurtunity to finish with par or birdie depend on success. Other holes with narrow fairways in par 4‘s and for example sharp dogleg in 14th requires to choose right club or allows to risk for award to land ball in good approach position. Everything depends on your courage. 50/50 was fun to play, but they must to improve conditions (price and etc.) and quality of fields. Value for price I found average.
No doubt every golf course rating is always a subject with a lot of subjectivity, depending on various criteria. I always rating by the following criteria: course complexity or challenging, fields condition (especially greens & fairways), service (only what you can get: buggie, club rent, condition of clubs, the amount of choice and etc. except staff and other subjective things that depends on your or staff mood), surrounding views or pleasure to the eyes and definitely value for the price. All criteries will be rating from 1 to 5 stars. Concerning Toia golf course my personal opinion is follow:
1. Challenging - 4* +
2. Condition - 3* (could be much more better)
3. Service - 5*
4. Surroundings - 4*
5. Value for the price - 3*
Quality must be changed to decide back here play again. Price OK, but follow that must be value.
