Situated just outside the small town of Harbour Springs in Emmet County, on Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, the course at True North Golf Club first opened for play in 2004, with fairways hewn from dense woodland overlooking the shores of nearby Little Traverse Bay rising and falling with regularity during a roller coaster round on the property.
Author Daniel Wexler had this to say in his book The American Private Golf Club Guide: “True North is a challenging, wooded test bearing all the modern stylings incumbent to Jim Engh’s designs. A bit less tactically intricate than some of Engh’s other layouts, it might almost be seen as his version of minimalism, particularly given its relative paucity of bunkers.”
Highlight holes include back-to-back par fives at holes 7 and 8 (the second of these three-shot holes is rated stroke index 1) then, on the back nine, the short par four 15th and 562-yard 18th, where a split fairway on the closing hole gives players a number of approach shot options to the home green.
