UNC Finley

It is the Finley golf course, located at University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, is a Tom Fazio redesign that isn't just a major attraction on it's Tar Heel tees but one of the best campus layouts. The course was inaugurated in its current form around 1999. UNC Finley was the architect's 11th design for his native state of North Carolina.

The course is home to players of the North Carolina Tar Heels men's and women's golf teams in collegiate competition The course was initially constructed through the financial contributions by Raleigh billionaire Albert Earle Finley in 1949 along with George Cobb designing the layout.

There was previously an 18-hole course designed for the US Army Air Corps Pre-Flight Training School that was located on UNC Chapel Hill. The course was further modified the Cobb course in the 1980s, before the decision was taken to ask Tom Fazio to redesign the layout.

"It wasn't a renovation or a rehabilitation," Tom Fazio says. "It could be one of the situations in which you basically blow up what was already there and then build entirely new golf course over it."

The new holes are a part of the old playways but there's not much that's new on Finley you'd recognize from prior. A second piece of land was purchased and forty-five acres of forest were cleared, as well as the removal of around 345,000 cubic yards dirt to make contours that weren't there before.

The course has been made eight hundred yards more long and the practice area is approximately four times as large than the old one. Fairway bunkers are big and deep. A few of the greenside bunkers are equipped with grass noses sticking out of the ground, which can cause a sloppy posture. Greens are usually open in front, which gives players to choose the possibility of a run-up shot.

According to the head professional Mike Wilkinson, highlight holes include the par four short second hole, which is described as "a shorter hole, just 343 yards from the back tees, however it's elevated, and it's difficult to discern the bottom of the flag, and difficult to see it in the distance."

"Once you begin the second nine the challenge gets harder," according to Mike.

"The 10th is a lengthy straight right-hand par 4 which turns abruptly towards the bend of the fairway. Driver is a tricky play from the tee as it's simple to hit it through the fairway. However, hitting anything other than driver leaves the player with an additional shot that is 200 yards or more towards an uphill green.

In the early drawings, Fazio had the 17th with two greens. While the construction process was progressing it was decided to put the greens together however with a five-foot drop between the two greens.

When the flag lies located on the left-hand side of green you will play to the left and right of the fairway bunkers deep in central areas of landings.

In the event that your flag on the lower right of the green are playing on onto the right, which a bit narrower and protected by the dense forests on the right, and the fairway bunkers that are deep on the left."
