Union League National Golf Club
Sand Barrens Golf Club was purchased by The Union League of Philidelphia in 2017. The club brought in Fry Straka to rework 27 holes which would open for play in 2022. The three nines are called Sherman, Meade, and Grant.
The course remained open during the renovation process with 18 in play from 2018 to 2022. 1.6 million cubic metres of earth was moved to create a new canvas. Native plantings were also used to blend the new work into the existing tapestry.
Jason Straka called upon inspiration from Pine Valley for the curated aesthetic with Fry naming Calusa Pines as the other course. The club also plans to crate a short course.
The course is bold and has been described as maximalist. It is manufactured and it does divide opinion but the common ground from those who have played it - it is fun!
