Situated half an hour’s drive east of downtown Louisville, the University of Louisville Golf Club – formerly the Cardinal Club – is owned and operated by the university, with a 7,192-yard Spencer Holt-designed layout in play.
Home to the university’s Men’s and Women’s Golf teams, this layout features bentgrass fairways and greens, complemented by an expansive short game facility and a multi-tiered driving range, along with a golf shop and full service bar and restaurant.
The course has hosted many top tournaments in recent years, including the NCAA Division II Men’s National Championship in 2012, the Kentucky Women’s Open in 2015 and the Kentucky Open in 2016.
Spencer Holt kindly supplied the following exclusive quote:
“The ULGC was my original design and opened in the fall of 2001. At that time the golf course was owned by University Clubs of America and called “The Cardinal Club”. It had an agreement with The University of Louisville to serve as the home course for their golf teams and exclusive marketing rights to the University of Louisville Alumni.
However, in 2014 the course was purchased outright and renamed The University of Louisville Golf Club. I was hired to give the course a face lift at that time; primarily renovating bunkers and adding more elaborate practice facilities and lengthening a few holes.
It provided a real challenge to design the course so close to the highway but I think we made the best of it and it turned out quite well all in all.”
