Wachesaw Plantation

The Wachesaw Plantation Club’s course lies within a forested property where many of the fairways are bordered by low-density housing. Located at the southern end of Myrtle Beach, it’s an early Tom Fazio design from the mid-1980s that stretches to 6,833 yards from the tips. The par five 18th - which sits on a bluff overlooking Murrell’s Inlet - concludes a round here in some style.

In The American Private Golf Club Guide, Daniel Wexler writes: “though dotted with more mundane holes that frequent most of Fazio’s later work, it is highlighted by the 349-yard 11th (a dogleg right where driving close to a huge bunker leaves the best approach angle) and the 565-yard 18th (whose green is perched above Murrell’s inlet) – with holes like the 438-yard 6th, the 530-yard pond-flanked 8th and the 201-yard 17th all being solid, if not quite ground breaking.

A good deal of the aesthetic polish that will later drive the Fazio wheel is on display here, but some of the wilder earth shaping illustrates that his style was still, in 1985, a work in progress.”
