The condition at Wairakei is beautiful. The fairways are some of the nicest I've ever had the privilege to play, and the greens are great too. In addition, the natural setting and wildlife are really special.
However, with the exception of a few holes, there's nothing about the golf that feels particularly remarkable. 14 was the most special hole on the course, with a very uniquely shaped green. The overall layout of the course was good and the design never felt repetitive, but all in all, it just felt like a good golf course that has fantastic manicuring in a beautiful natural setting.
If you are in the area and can only play Wairakei or Kinloch, I'd have to pick Kinloch every day of the week. However, it is worth it to play both, especially to appreciate how unique NZ is in that you can have two extremely different courses just down the road from each other.
