A 9-hole layout was established at Warrington Golf Club in 1903 then another nine holes were added four years later, with fourteen holes laid out to the west of the A49 road and four holes on the east side.

The following edited extract is from James Braid and his Four Hundred Golf Courses by John F. Moreton and Iain Cumming:

“Alistair MacKenzie came in 1914, four new greens and bunkers, Colt in 1921, contribution unspecified, Ted Ray in 1923, with more land and four new holes, and Ray again in 1931 with more land, this time to remove the east side holes.

Somehow the committee was not convinced by Ray’s plans and decided to call in James Braid, in the autumn of 1931, for his opinion. The revised course opened on 31st August 1933. It appears that the changes involved seven new holes, lengthening of six, two new greens, re-angling of one and retention of two.”

In the more modern era, Frank Pennink made minor alterations in 1964, replacing the old 17th hole with a new par three 6th hole; installing a new tee on the 7th hole; and lengthening both the 4th and 5th holes.

Today, the course measures 6,240 yards from the back tees, playing to a par of 71, with holes arranged as two returning nines. Highlights include the tough, right doglegging par five 5th (“Cromwell”) and the equally difficult par four 14th (“Panorama”).
