William Watson laid out the original course at Westmoreland Country Club in 1912, five years prior to Jim Barnes winning the Western Open. The unusual pairing of William Langford and A.W. Tillinghast redesigned the layout ten years later before Patty Berg claimed the 1938 U.S. Women's Amateur here at Wilmette.

Westmoreland has since undergone various revisions, including a major renovation by Arthur Hills in the early 1990s. Fast-forward to 2017 when Hills & Forrest International Golf Course Architects returned to rebuild all bunkers, which now feature bearded fescue edges.

“Surprisingly, nearly all of Watson’s original routing still exists,” commented Daniel Wexler in The Chicago Area Golf Guide, “though virtually every hole has been substantially altered.”
