Weston Super Mare is a charming old school links/seaside course that’s well worth turning off the M5 for. While not in the league of Saunton, St Endoc etc it has plenty of quality holes to make the trip worthwhile. The course is squeezed into a pretty small site, some of the tees are alarmingly close to greens which definitely focuses the mind when hitting approach shots, expect hear ‘fore’ shouts echoing around the course!
Despite being flat, lacking dunes and the sea only visible at the far end of the course it has plenty of links character, firm fasting draining turf, thick fescue rough and great pot bunkers defending many greens. I felt the best holes were the par 3’s, of varying length demanding a quality shot or severe punishment awaits, the 7th bit me hard when I pulled a 5 iron into thick rough on the 8th tee slope. I think the course is a lot tougher than it’s short length suggests, being such a tight site there are plenty of drives with OOB very close and green complexes which will spit back careless shots. The quality of greens was excellent, firm and true with great roll. Overall definitely worth a detour if you’re on the way to the South West’s higher profile courses.
