Weymouth

In 1909, disgruntled members of Weymouth, Dorchester and County Golf Club broke away to form their own club, engaging James Braid to design a new 18-layout on land leased from the local authorities. The new course opened for play on 25th April 1910.

Part of the course was turned over to crop production during the Great War and the same thing happened during the Second World War. In fact, the course only returned to full operation in 1953, marked with an exhibition match involving the three Whitcombe brothers.

A relief road was built across the north side of the property during the 1980s, leading to the introduction of new holes 10 to 13.

Nowadays, the course extends to just over 6,000 yards from the back markers and plays to a par of 70 (35 out then 35 in) with one par five on the outward half at the 9th and one par five on the inward half at the 16th.

Highlight holes include the left doglegging par four 2nd; the tough par four 6th (rated stroke index 2); the last of the par threes at the 161- yard 15th; and the demanding par four finishing hole which swings markedly left from the tee to the home green.

World Top 100 Golf Courses

The latest ranking of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World serves as the ultimate global golf bucket list. Most members of our World Top 100 Panel are seasoned golfers, each playing 20-30 of these courses annually while travelling extensively over decades to form their opinions on others. We recognise that opinions vary—even among our panel members. Rankings are subjective, and there are undoubtedly 50 or more courses in the UK and USA alone that could easily fit onto this list.
