Golf is a great leveller and yesterday was my time to be knocked back in my place. But before all that, let’s address the good aspects of the day.
When I got the offer from Lee to come and play 36 holes at @woburngolfclub it was a pretty quick confirmation on my part. Two lucky people got to witness the public humiliation that was my game.
The Dukes course is Woburn’s middle child in terms of its ranking, with it sitting three places (51st) behind it’s bigger brother The Marquess (48th) in the Top 100 rankings. Personally I have them slightly further apart than that, but I also have them both sitting higher in my own personal rankings.
The Marquess is the championship course, but the dukes is no slouch at all. With the fairways and green sites being soft underfoot it was playing long. The plethora of woodland, mostly towering and ruler straight pine trees, that line the fairways leave you with very little room for error and I found this out very quickly.
The sounds of golf ball ricocheting off of tree trunks was all too familiar by the end of the day. And in general I really just struggled to get anything going. Resulting in what I’ve described as most likely, the worst round of golf I’ve ever played. There were some good shots in there but I genuinely lost my head, and by the end of the round I wanted no more of it. The Dukes had firmly beaten me into submission.
The company got me through and sometimes that’s all you need on a golf course, to forget the bad things and remember that a bad day on the course, is better than a good day in the office (cheers for that one Mike 😉).
The rain came on the 17th and we ventured into the club house at half time very wet, miserable and certain I was heading home. However, a pep talk from my peers, the Woburn Burger and light refreshment got me up for another go at the big brother. The tee time rolled round and off we popped for another stab at Woburns finest. Keep an eye out for that tomorrow.
All in Woburn is a fantastic venue and would be a great place to be a member. Great courses and great all round facilities.

The latest ranking of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World serves as the ultimate global golf bucket list. Most members of our World Top 100 Panel are seasoned golfers, each playing 20-30 of these courses annually while travelling extensively over decades to form their opinions on others. We recognise that opinions vary—even among our panel members. Rankings are subjective, and there are undoubtedly 50 or more courses in the UK and USA alone that could easily fit onto this list.
