arra Yarra Golf Club is one of the top Sandbelt courses in Australia, designed by Alex Russell back in 1926.The course’s biggest defence lies in its greens.Players quickly realize just how fast and delicate they are meaning that putting becomes absolutely critical if you want to score well.As with all great Sandbelt courses, the bunkers at Yarra Yarra are deep, creative, and always demanding.A real standout as with many courses in Australia is the par-threes.There’s an incredible variety here: some demanding long irons, others requiring short wedges, challenging every part of a golfer’s bag and skillset. While Yarra Yarra might not be as internationally famous as some of its Sandbelt neighbours, it absolutely holds its own.The course layout is split by a road down the middle. The majority of the front nine sits behind the clubhouse, featuring mostly shorter holes that test strategy, placement, and course management. The back nine across the road is made up of longer holes, rewarding big hitters and power players. It sets up a “tale of two nines,” forcing players to adapt and showcase different strengths throughout the round. One fair criticism of Yarra Yarra could be the lack of elevation change across the property. The land itself is quite flat, with the clubhouse perched on the highest point. This places even more pressure on the hole designs to provide drama and character. While the back nine manages to deliver that grand, memorable feeling, the front nine can sometimes feel a little less inspiring slightly lowering Yarra Yarra’s ranking among its Sandbelt peers.Off the course, the club has a fantastic community spirit. There’s a charming tradition where members exchange 20-cent coins if they’ve been beaten in a Stableford competition, creating a vibrant, friendly atmosphere in the bar after rounds. It’s little traditions like this that make Yarra Yarra such a beloved and welcoming club.
