Located close to the state border with Washington, the 18 holes of the Circling Raven layout on the Coeur d’Alene Indian reservation meander around an expansive, moderately bunkered 620-acre site.
Built on the site of an old sawmill, the course at the Coeur d’Alene resort is most famous for the floating green on the par three 14th hole where the distance from tee to putting surface is changed every day by computer control.
Occupying a spectacular site on the banks of the Snake River, Francis L James laid out Blue Lakes Country Club in 1948 where the signature par three 6th hole drops 200 feet from tee to green.
Jack Nicklaus reworked the old Hidden Lakes golf course amongst the waterways of the Pack River, creating the new 18-hole layout at the Idaho Club in 2008. It’s a testing layout with water featuring on all but two of the holes.
Canyon Springs Golf Course began as a 9-hole affair in 1972, with fairways set out by Max Mueller within a former fruit orchard. Fifteen years later, Bob Baldock added another nine to complete the present 18-hole layout.
Designed by Andy North and architect Roger Packard, the forested front nine at Whitetail Club & Resort is routed around wetlands with holes on the more open back nine ending around a sparkling man-made lake.
A 27-hole golf complex, the Sun Valley resort features the Trail Creek layout as its main 18-hole course. Particularly strong on the front nine, it also boasts two impressive par threes at holes 10 and 17 on the back nine.
The respected architect A.V. Macan added nine holes to the original 9-hole course at Hillcrest Country Club in the late 1950s and Robert Muir Graves renovated the layout a decade later.
