Situated to the west of the Philippines, Micronesia is a large region in the western Pacific Ocean comprising hundreds of islands that are grouped into the four states of Kosrae, Pohnpei, Chuuk and Yap. Although officially independent, Micronesia has an agreement with the USA which allows Washington to establish military bases within its territory, effectively allowing the western superpower to provide a defence facility for the region. Tourism is a largely undeveloped industry within Micronesia, which is a real pity, as the territory has plenty to offer tourists by way of its natural sand, sea and sun resources. Unfortunately, the remoteness of its location is a major drawback when it comes to attracting outside visitors.
