Ian Woosnam at Apes Hill Barbados

October 13, 2025

Few names in European golf carry the weight and legacy of Ian Woosnam. Affectionately known as "Woosie," the Welshman is a former World Number One, a Ryder Cup hero and winning captain, and the 1991 Masters champion. As one of the legendary "Big Five" - alongside Seve Ballesteros, Sir Nick Faldo, Bernhard Langer, and Sandy Lyle - Woosnam helped redefine European golf on the global stage through the 80s and 90s. In 2017, his extraordinary career, which yielded more than 50 tournament victories worldwide, was rightly honoured with induction into the World Golf Hall of Fame.

For much of the year, you will now find him among the sun-dappled fairways of Apes Hill, Barbados, where shared values, passions and a sense of community have led to him becoming global ambassador.

"I've been coming to Barbados since the '90s," Woosnam says. "At first, it was to relax in the winter before the season started or to have a break between events. But the more time I spent here, the more I realised how special it was. Eventually, I bought a place, and now it is a home from home. I simply fell in love with Barbados and the freedom of the island; the people are just so friendly."

From what started as a holiday destination and a winter break, Woosnam now splits his time between Jersey, the picturesque Channel Island, and Barbados, with the latter becoming a place of belonging.

"There's so much more to Barbados than you might think," Woosnam explains. "Of course, the beaches and sunshine are amazing, but it's the people, the culture — there's such warmth here. And with the weather, I can play golf all year round. That's a pretty good life."

A long association with the island, coupled with a love of golf, real estate and the relaxed island lifestyle, matched perfectly with Apes Hill Barbados own ethos of playable luxury and community spirit.

"The first time I visited Apes Hill, I knew it was something different," says Woosnam. "The location, the layout, the sense of space — it's like the land was made for golf. For the routing, the challenge, the views, the sense of nature, there is no finer test on the island."

That initial spark has since evolved into a unique partnership. Woosnam is now global ambassador for Apes Hill Barbados, a role that sees him hosting guests, playing the championship course with visiting golfers, and sharing his personal take on this world-class venue.

A Champion's Hole-by-Hole Guide to Apes Hill

Apes Hill's championship course — redesigned by the late Ron Kirby — has quickly gained a reputation as one of the most spectacular courses in the Caribbean.

The par-71 championship course features deep gullies carving through the fairway with ancient bearded fig trees and other indigenous fauna. It's a unique championship course where large troops of Barbados Green monkeys roam – and the 20th Hole Restaurant and Clubhouse waits to welcome you with a refreshing drink.

"Ron did a fantastic job," says Woosnam. "He made it challenging but fun, with elevation changes and sea views from almost every hole. You can see every green from the tee. That's rare."

Feature Holes at Apes Hill

Here's how Woosnam plays a few of his favourites:

Hole 2: A favourite hole and an early indication of the drama to come. "A risk-and-reward par 4 that is drivable if you want to take it on – although you will need to give it your very best!"

Hole 4: "This one's got drama. Elevated tee, tight landing zone, and a green that will punish a bad approach."

Hole Four Apes Hill

Hole 6: At 638 yards from the tips, it's a beast. "But move forward a tee or two, and it becomes birdie territory. That's the genius of it."

6th Hole Apes Hill

Hole 12: A long par 3 with Atlantic views behind. "It's exposed and breezy — you've got to trust your number and commit."

12th Hole Apes Hill Golf Club

Hole 13: A fearsome-looking par 4 and one of the most picturesque and challenging on the course. "Trees, rocks and a long bunker running down the left of the green with a drop down a ravine. The hole has everything, and one of my favourites."

Hole 13 Apes Hill

Hole 14: The third of a glorious stretch of holes. "You have views of the Atlantic all down the left side of the fairway as the hole sweeps down and right to left. The secret is not to go long as it is a devilish chip back."

Hole 14 Apes Hill

Hole 16: The Cave Hole: "One of the most intimidating tee shots on the course. A stiff breeze makes it even trickier."

Beyond Golf at Apes Hill

While the course itself is worth the journey, the wider Apes Hill lifestyle is what truly sets the resort apart. There's an easy elegance here — relaxed yet refined exclusivity — whether you're soaking in the views from the clubhouse, sipping a chilled rosé at sunset, or exploring the trails that wind through the surrounding nature reserve.

"You don't just come here to golf," says Woosnam. "You come to slow down a bit. To take it all in."

The 20th Hole Halfway House and The Noisy Cricket, Apes Hill's relaxed clubhouse eatery, are favourite haunts of Woosie's — not just for the menu, but for the conversations shared over post-round drinks. The outdoor terrace offers sweeping views, gentle breezes, and a casual atmosphere that makes it feel like home.
