Leicestershire and Rutland out-foxed
Leicestershire and Rutland Best In County rankings updated
The detailed review of our English Best In County rankings continues, albeit at what might appear to be a sedate pace. The reality is that our process is rather time consuming, because it largely relies on feedback from those golf clubs affiliated to their relevant Golf Union (Leicestershire and Rutland is one of ten golf unions attached to the Midland Union). To our great surprise, we were overwhelmed with feedback from the Leicestershire and Rutland clubs.
There are only 33 golf clubs affiliated to the L&R union, but we received feedback from very nearly 50% and the results were not only fascinating but also very consistent – except for feedback from one club, which was rather strange compared to the rest.
Most English golfers that travel to play the best golf courses have heard of Luffenham Heath, but few golfers outside the Midland region will have heard of Longcliffe Golf Club. To date, only one of our team has played Longcliffe, where the fairways weave through the ancient Charnwood Forest, and he concurs that it is indeed an underrated course (we should listen to him more carefully in the future). Respondents to our survey wholeheartedly agreed, and for a period, we thought Longcliffe might displace Luffenham Heath at the top of our L&R Best in County rankings. However, Luffenham came through strongly in the end and remains our No.1 in county.
The Top 3 remain unchanged, but from position four onwards, it’s all change. The Leicestershire Golf Club and Willesley Park Golf Club both move up one place at the expense of Rothley Park Golf Club. Charnwood Forest displaces Kirby Muxloe and we have two new entries in our Leicestershire and Rutland Top 10 – Hinckley Golf Club and Glen Gorse Golf Club at positions 9 and 10 respectively.
