Mauritius golf courses: where quality, not quantity, really counts

16th November 2014

For most amateurs in Europe, the golf season’s long over, with only the odd winter warmer to look forward to at one of the coastal links during the cold, dark days that lie ahead between now and the Spring. Even the top professionals have almost completed their tournament play for 2014, with the European Tour soon to reach its climax in Dubai at the DP World Tour Championship.

The European Senior Tour lasts a little longer, however, extending into next month when the traditional end of season MCB Tour Championship takes place on the sun-kissed Indian Ocean island of Mauritius. With Colin Montgomerie set to claim the John Jacobs Trophy as the leading player on the Senior Tour Order of merit, it promises to be a marvellous golfing occasion for the leading players in the 50 and over age category.

Le Touessrok Golf CourseTop 100 Golf Courses has just completed its biennial reappraisal of courses in Mauritius and so the nation’s Top 5 golf course chart has now been updated to reflect what’s been happening on the golfing front over the last couple of years. There may not exactly be an abundance of courses on the island (eight 18-hole layouts and two 9-hole tracks to be precise) but any perceived lack of quantity is more than made up for in quality.

It’ll come as little surprise to many to learn that the leading course in Mauritius, the Bernhard Langer-designed Le Touessrok, retains its position as the nation’s number 1 layout. For over a decade now, this prestigious track has delivered a world class golfing experience to visiting golfers and it seems well capable of continuing to do so for some considerable time to come.

Heritage Golf Club MauritiusThe 18-hole layout at Heritage Golf Club is our only new entry at number 2, and it’s a fabulous Peter Matkovich course that will host the inaugural AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open in May next year, the first ever tri-sanctioned professional golf tournament endorsed by the European, Asian and Sunshine Tours.

Making way for this course in our chart, the Ernie Els-designed Anahita layout and Hugh Baiocchi’s 18-holes at Belle Mare Plage (Legend) (where Monty and company compete in next month’s Senior Tour event) both drop down one place from their previous 2013 chart positions to number 3 and 4, respectively.

Completing our Mauritius Top 5, designer Rodney-Wright’s Tamarina course, which held the second edition of the 54-hole MCB Indian Ocean Amateur Golf Open last month, retains the same number 5 spot that it occupied last time around.
