Award for farmer who created top golf course

2nd August 2008

Former potato farmer Richard Sattler has won a regional Entrepreneur of the Year award for developing the Barnbougle Dunes Golf Links in the State's North-East.

Accounting firm Ernst & Young announced Mr Sattler as the Southern Region winner of their Services award yesterday.

"Despite beginning with no knowledge of golfers, golfing or the golfing industry, Richard Sattler has turned what was a cattle and potato farming property into a world class golf facility," Ernst & Young strategic growth manager Jon Dobell said.

"After battling limited funds, a shortage of skilled labour and unpredictable weather conditions, Richard opened Barnbougle Dunes in 2004.

"Within four months of opening it was ranked the number one public access course in Australia and is now ranked 59th in the world."

Mr Sattler will go on to compete in the national awards in Sydney in November.
