Top 10 Golf Courses in Dunbartonshire 2015
Dunbartonshire Best in Region rankings updated
Located to the north and northwest of Glasgow, Dunbartonshire is an old Scottish lieutenancy, which in modern local government is now administered by two local councils, namely West Dunbartonshire and East Dunbartonshire.
Organised golf within the region was first recognised in 1896 when six clubs formed the Dumbartonshire Golf Unionand this governing body, which is one of sixteen affiliated to the Scottish Golf Union, now oversees the golfing affairs of twenty-five clubs in its membership.
As part of our Scottish golf course re-ranking process, we recently contacted clubs and golf professionals in each of the Scottish districts to help us update our Caledonian ranking lists and the results of this time consuming exercise are now being rolled out in the weeks and months ahead.
Dunbartonshire is in the fortunate position of having two courses, Loch Lomond and The Carrick, ranked within our national Top 100 chart for Scotland. Indeed, the private Loch Lomond layout is one of only a dozen or so Scottish courses listed in our World Top 100 rankings.
Unsurprisingly, these two courses, both of which were designed by North American architects (Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish at Loch Lomond and Doug Carrick at The Carrick), remain at positions 1 and 2 in the Dunbartonshire chart, head and shoulders above all the other contenders.
A couple of premier parkland tracks make upward moves in our new rankings, each of them climbing two places. Cardross, established in 1895 and modified by James Braid in 1921, rises to number 3 and Balmore, a Harry Vardon design from 1907, advances to number 5.
Two courses drop out of the chart and they are Vale of Leven and the Carrickstone layout at 36-hole Dullatur. In their place, we have Hayston (a James Braid design from 1926) at number 6 and Douglas Park (where golfers have played since 1897) at number 9.
