Love exploring and seeing golf courses all over the world. Fun is the most crucial ingredient I look for in a course. I enjoy courses that have strong strategic aspects, flow nicely from hole to hole, have the ground game in play and ultimately leave you wanting to come back for more.
A perfect way to finish off the morning I spent at Walton Heath, Reigate Heath is a 9 hole course set on a brilliantly sandy site. You can tell the quality of the land as...
Set on a sandy site with lots of heather and deep bunkers, the Old course at Walton Heath reminded me of Ganton in being as close as possible to a links playing experienc...
The second course I visited on the heathland leg of my trip, The Berkshire is one hell of a place to play golf. Out of every course I visited over the last 6 weeks, this...
Beautiful on the eye and intriguing from start to finish, Swinley Forest is a heathland masterpiece. Only a Par 69, but played off the back tees this is a real challenge,...
An interesting site for a golf course, Brancepeth is a Harry Colt design not far from Durham in the North East of England. As with Garforth, Brancepeth has lots of rumple...
Alastair Mackenzies input is evident all over his native Yorkshire. Garforth is a parkland layout that was built by the good doctor. The course is characterized by lots o...
Another member of the Mackenzie designs in and around Leeds, Bingley St. Ives is unique in that it has a mixture of holes, some parkland, some moorland and even some heat...
A course perhaps well known for its uniqueness in having 22 holes, meaning there are up to 5 (!) different layouts possible, Seaton Carew goes under the radar as a links...
Any course that is consistently ranked in world top 100 lists is always going to increase your own expectation levels going into your first round there. This was certainl...
Home of Lee Westwood, Worksop is in esteemed company being nearby to Holinwell and Lindrick to name just a few. The 1st and 2nd play up and back, a theme that is repeated...
Known as the members course at The Warwickshire, partnering the Kings Course, the Earls is an American style parkland layout. Most holes are tree lined, for example the l...
Around the world, especially in the USA, Alastair MacKenzie courses are held in the highest regard and incredibly sought after. In Yorkshire, home of the good doctor for...
Seacroft is a rugged true links, set back from the sea by a marsh, meaning no real sea views. When I played the fairways were extremely burnt out, but I don’t judge cours...
Next door to Alwoodley and Moortown, Sand Moor is another Yorkshire MacKenzie design, that deserves its place in the neighbourhood. The layout is over hilly terrain with...
Set in the North Midlands- legend has it that the 4th green (more on that later) once had the borders of Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire and Derby all running through it. It i...
Set on a wild moorland site, Halifax is mostly a James Braid design, with alterations from Alastair MacKenzie. This course really is something different, with characteris...
A pleasant, well-conditioned parkland layout, the first 7 holes play alongside the River Wharfe, and the rest of the holes are mostly tree lined. The 2nd and 3rd holes ar...
Not far from Scarborough on the North East coast of England, Ganton is a classic layout, brutally tough, but also has lots of fun features. It reminds me of an inland Car...
The West Course at East Sussex National is a brutal test of golf. From the tee, it’s extremely tight and narrow, so make sure you have plenty of balls. This claustrophobi...
I will caveat this review with saying this resort style golf isn’t my cup of tea, but the East Course does a good job at making the golf more interesting. The 1st sets th...
