I started posting reviews on this website soon after it came online and I found it fun to air my views on the many courses I’d played over the years. I soon realized that my opinions were sometimes shared by others and sometimes not. It’s easy to post negative reviews after bad experiences and equally simple to post positive ones following great experiences. I found myself thinking about why I felt disappointment after playing some top courses. Disappointment was of course due to expectation. On the flip side I’ve thoroughly enjoyed playing some hidden gems because expectations were lower. If only sites like this were around a few decades ago I probably would have enjoyed some of the top courses much more.
I’ve not played Wrangaton for a while, but it is absolutely a course with a split personality that has 9 bunkerless and treeless moorland holes with greens protected by e...
It’s nice to see Churston on the website as it’s a great cliff top course that asks lots of questions, especially when the wind blows. Some fantastic views and a strategi...
Exeter is lovely parkland course, a little on the short side in terms of yardage but a good golfing test nonetheless. For the best experience on the greens play the cours...
Unique is a cliché used to describe many courses but the 20-hole European is surely more unique than most. Perhaps it’s too difficult for the handicap player, especially...
I returned to Saunton to play both courses in April and we played in a heat wave with temperatures more akin to Spain. Played the West course in the morning and the bigge...
After a 5-year gap, I returned to Royal North Devon with great anticipation. On my previous trip I thoroughly enjoyed the course but I enjoyed my return trip even more. D...
The West course at Saunton does not have the “bigness” of its older brother the East, but in my view, the West is more enjoyable for the handicap golfer, especially playe...
Both courses at Stoke by Nayland are actually pretty good and offer a great feeling of solitude in pretty, undulating countryside. The Gainsborough was not originally con...
Having lived in Essex for more than 15 years I can safely say that there isn’t a single Essex course that has managed to get my pulse racing. Abridge is another of those...
The Lansdowne has hosted a number of notable amateur championships and for very good reasons. That’s because it’s a tough, perhaps rigorous track, especially if you’re dr...
Valderrama is a bit like the "The Emperor's New Clothes", the golfing media seem to rate this as either the best (or second best) course in Continental Europe in fear of...
Portland will always be the “Relief” course for Royal Troon, but that’s not to say that it’s not worth playing, because it is, it’s just that it’s not quite the “Real” th...
There are so many courses in and around the north London area that fall into the nice but not startling parkland category and Brickendon is one of them. The course has a...
Carlisle is a really enjoyable and well maintained track that played quite long despite its modest yardage when I last played here in the autumn. You can see why it is us...
I’ve played Thorpeness on a number of occasions when I lived in Essex and my home club was closed due to being waterlogged in the winter. Along with nearby Aldeburgh, Tho...
The Blue is much more of a conventional layout than the Red with four par3s, three par 5s and the rest fours. The Blue is less tranquil than the Red with the busy A322 ru...
After years of waiting patiently, I finally managed to get a game on the Heritage. I had high expectations as I've played the International on a number of occasions and t...
It's all about opinions and you can put me down as a fan of the International which I think is every bit as good as the Heritage. Granted there are a few par fours that a...
I've played Mill Ride on numerous occasions and it's hard to critiscise the course and the facilities. This is a really good golf course but it sits alongside some truly...
Played and stayed at Pinehurst just ahead of the Open and it was a truly magnificent experience. No.2 is just an amazing course and putting on those greens is something e...
