I started posting reviews on this website soon after it came online and I found it fun to air my views on the many courses I’d played over the years. I soon realized that my opinions were sometimes shared by others and sometimes not. It’s easy to post negative reviews after bad experiences and equally simple to post positive ones following great experiences. I found myself thinking about why I felt disappointment after playing some top courses. Disappointment was of course due to expectation. On the flip side I’ve thoroughly enjoyed playing some hidden gems because expectations were lower. If only sites like this were around a few decades ago I probably would have enjoyed some of the top courses much more.

Ballybunion (Cashen) 19/09/2005

4th Kerry - Best in Area 26th Ireland Ranking
Don't go to Ballybunion just to play the Old course, make sure you put the Cashen high up on your itinerary, it's a stunning ramble through the dunes (or in our case, a h...

I have only played the Palmerston course and I have to say that it is good...very good in fact. In many ways it's reminiscent to the Marquess course at Woburn. Everything...

11th Surrey - Best in Area 33rd England Ranking 79th Britain & Ireland Ranking
Recognition at last for one of Surrey's finest (and there's plently of great golf to be had here). In my view Hindhead is better than a huge number of already ranked cour...

Royal Musselburgh 15/02/2005

19th Lothians - Best in Area
It's a very pleasant parkland course with some cunning bunkering. But from a design and layout perspective, Royal Musselburgh doesn't really get me excited, but the cours...

Felixstowe Ferry (Martello) 15/02/2005

6th Suffolk - Best in Area
This is an unusual links course and extremely enjoyable too but it has something missing and I can't put my finger on exactly what it is...perhaps it's the lack of dunes....

I really enjoyed playing here, more so than La Moye, which has a better reputation. I think the main reason is that Royal Jersey has so much history and it also plays clo...

3rd Berkshire - Best in Area 36th England Ranking 85th Britain & Ireland Ranking
The Blue's a good course but not as good as the Red. The opening hole is an absloute brute of a par three. Not the easiest opener after lunch and a couple of beers. The B...

Seacroft 02/11/2004

2nd Lincolnshire - Best in Area 80th England Ranking
Seacroft is an honest undiluted test of golf. There's nothing frilly about this links course. A basic 9 out 9 back affair with a small ridge of dunes between the outward...

Gullane (No.2) 24/09/2004

I can't make my mind up about Linden Hall. Clearly its best facet is the excellent group of par threes - they are first class. There are more doglegs here than at Batters...
