I am an 10-handicap member of Les Mielles in Jersey, where I am lucky enough to be able to regularly play some great golf both on the island and in France. I'm a traditional links golf addict and have an unofficial challenge with a good friend to play all classic links courses in Britain in a few weeks per year, of course using the Top 100 Golf Courses and its informed users as our Bible!
If I could only play at one golf course for the rest of my life it would have to be Royal Dornoch (gorse controversy not withstanding) – maybe one day I would birdie Foxy?
Gil Hanse has done a very good job with the land that he was given, and while it's impossible not to be aware of the flat location Craighead is a very good golf course. P...
It's been a few years since I played here, but it is as fresh as if it were yesterday and I'm sure it hasn't changed ! They certainly couldn't build them like this any m...
I'm surprised at some of the low rankings for Balcomie. It's definitely not a championship length course, but if I think of fun rounds of golf I've had on a traditional l...
St Nicholas is a quality, very enjoyable Links course and fits in nicely with a trip to the nearby star attractions. It's nice to have fun on a shorter, traditional link...
Torrance feels slight in the shade of Kittocks - slightly less memorable, although perfectly enjoyable clifftop links golf in good condition with some nice views. St Andr...
An excellent complement to its neighbouring Lundin Links, to which it feels like the artisan club. Leven is unpretentious and a little rougher round the edges, but offers...
I've played the Castle Course a couple of times, post-reshaping, both individually and as part of a Society, and it was great and popular both times despite one day being...
Like its siblings, perfectly acceptable for a society golf trip - the shuttle buses etc all work well from a few hotels - but not a destination for a two or four ball. Sl...
In an ideal World for your first visit to Gleneagles you wouldn't have to choose between Brawn and Beauty, and you'd play both Kings and Queens. Complementary in nature,...
Southerness is a perfect embodiment of lovely Dumfries & Galloway; overlooked, somewhat plain to look at but genuine, friendly, good value and not afflicted by the same v...
Gullane #2 is an excellent course in its own right, and the first of the 3 that i played, but having played #1 and #3 subsequently the rankings are correct. #2 is like #1...
I'm lucky to have played the New quite a few times now - locals prefer it since the Old is too busy and slow, and the Jubilee and Castle are tricked up. Much quicker gre...
#1 is a superb course, surprisingly hilly, with top quality fun golf. From the gentle opener, to the very tricky uphill holes that get you to the top of the hill, then r...
Prestwick is one of my favourite Links courses, where the old cliche "they don't make 'em like this any more" is probably truer than any other essentially flat Championsh...
A tremendously fun course woven into beautiful scenery, but it's a real test. Each time I've played King 's it's felt harder: you've got everything here with blind drives...
A newish course, some quite long green to free transits, lots of water and sea views but no seaside holes so not really my kind of course, but a fun relaxing fairly quick...
A perfect afternoon of seaside golf; cloudless skies but not too hot, and a tremendously fun and scenic golf course. The benign and forgiving sibling of West Cliffs shoul...
Played Penina a few years ago now, so can't comment on current condition, but it's a superior resort course, longer than many Algarve courses with a more English style la...
